8. Underrepresented: postpunk, punk, ska, alt country |
|
No No No First, as to the names you mentioned:
No Yes Yes No Maybe
Who else should be in?
Joy Division/New Order: Induct them together, since it's 75% the same band. Joy Division is a lot like the Velvet Underground. They were never a big commercial success, but they had an immeasurable influence on the development of rock music. Joy Division inspired U2, REM, and all of the current crop of postpunk revivalists like Bloc Party, Interpol, etc. New Order was really the first band to fuse guitar-based postpunk with chunks of Krautrock and disco.
The Cure: The iconic goth band. Like New Order, they eventually combined dance club sounds with their original skittery guitar rock.
Steve Earle: The embodiment of "Why The Nashville Establishment Chomps The Log". Earle may be the greatest American songwriter since Bob Dylan, yet 90% of Americans have never heard of him. Who else can write heart-wrenching country ballads about death row, twangy rockabilly, and rollicking Celtic trad all at the same time? He's a genius.
Others who should be considered:
Peter Gabriel (as a solo artist) Iron Maiden Motorhead Husker Du The Replacements X Eminem (not eligible for a good while, though) Rush Public Image Ltd (if only to see how Lydon reacts) English Beat/Madness/The Specials (come on, give us at least one ska band)

16. Steve Earle and Peter Gabriel should be shoe-ins. |
|
I never liked the Cure, but I can see a good argument for them. Maybe I didn't hear enough of the early stuff you're talking about with them.
Husker Du I can agree with. Eminem, too.
Iron Maiden and Motorhead are on the bubble for me, to steal a sports term. The rest I don't have a strong opinion of, or even know well enough.
Except Rush. I hate Rush, and think they are grossly overrated, but it is the Hall of Fame and not the Hall of Talent and Ability and Listenability (as the Hall has proven already), so they should be in. Meanwhile, the HoF generates a lot of publicity keeping them out, which may be part of their plan.
Just my opinions. Probably useless, as always. I just wanted to second you on Steve Earle, but wound up with the rest because I didn't want to get back to my real job yet. :)

27. Metal needs some representation |
|
I'm not a huge fan of either Iron Maiden or Motorhead, but metal is an important part of rock music, and these are two of the most important acts in the genre. If Metallica is in, then these bands, who were obvious influences, should be in as well.
Rush managed to break out of the prog box, and, weirdly enough, they were always a "gateway drug", a band that people listened to while they were making the jump from the usual 14 year old song catalog (AC/DC, Zeppelin, etc) to alternative rock.
Joy Divison and The Cure are really no-brainers. They really laid the groundwork for artsy postpunk, in the same way that Husker DU and the Replacements laid the groundwork for American college radio rock and grunge. One of the Hall criteria is influence on the development of rock music, so The Cure, Joy Division, Husker Du, and The 'Mats need to be inducted.

(though I did check the inductee list before spouting off)
Public Enemy (Run-DMC is in, which they deserve, but not PE?) Dead Kennedys (Sex Pistols are in so why not the American version?) Nirvana (I was SHOCKED to not see them on the list--is it because others are still in other bands?) The Pixies (yeah, they aren't a huge name but damn solid)

They should be a slam-dunk. Gradnaster Flash and Run-DMC opened the door for rap acts, so PE is kind of an obvious next step.
Not a Dead Kennedy's fan, but I guess if you're going to go for a hardcore-oriented act, it's got to be them or Black Flag (or Bad Brains, if you want to recognize the DC scene).

36. Yes and King Crimson ... |

defined a genre. And while it may be stylish at the moment to "hate" on that genre, there is no denying that it was groundbreaking at the time, and hugely influential. The fact that these two bands are not in the HOF makes the whole thing a joke, IMHO. They ought to rename the place the "Hall of Bands the Cool Kids Like" or "Hall of Bands Rolling Stone Magazine Likes".
Btw, I like Rush, but to me they are obviously influenced by Yes and should not be inducted before Yes.

38. The fact that Madonna is - This IS the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame |
|
And although I respect the impact that Madonna has had on hte music industry these past 25 years - she is not a rock musician. She's pop - she influenced a completely differently genre of music.
I would be less upset if they call it what it is - The Commerical Pop Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

Billy Joel? The Lovin' Spoonful? James Taylor? ABBA? Can you say "Boomer Friendly Fluff"? Meanwhile, entire genres are grossly underrepresented. Postpunk has U2, but not Joy Division, who inspired and influenced them. Likewise, Motorhead is ignored, despite being the most influential band in the creation of modern metal. And there's not a single ska revival act like The English Beat, Madness, or The Specials.

It's not how many 'good tunes' they had but the influence their music had in the industry. Yes had a sound & style that was very distinct and without a doubt deserves to be in there.

Not somnolent crypto-jazz?
OK, kidding. The Hall is really misnamed; it's a Pop Music Hall of Fame, and with some justification. The lines between rock, pop, jazz, blues, dance, fusion, rap, etc can get pretty damn fuzzy.
My big gripe is the overemphasis on mellow Boomer-pleasing acts. James Taylor, Billy Joel, Elton John, and the Lovin' friggin' Spoonful are in before The Cure? Yeah, ok.
