Do you drink green tea for health/mental benefits?
If so, what are the benefits? What do you seek from green tea? Does it really make a difference?

3. No, not for health/mental benefits. I drink it in quantity because I REALLY LOVE to urinate.
Green tea of any kind runs through me quicker than beer. Go figure.

Just kidding about loving to urinate (for the record).

5. Yeah, well, beer flushes the kidneys too but it isn't so great for them OR the liver.
I think green tea is a fairly safe bet. We grow our own herbs and my wife puts together some wonderful combinations.

8. However, I have read that beer does help prevent stone formation.
I don't know if it's the hops or what, but have heard people tell me that their doctors advised having a little beer in the diet :)

I'd have a garden, too, if I lived where I had some dirt ;) I used to be pretty good at it. Do you also grow tea? Or is it the wrong climate here? You might also see if you can grow "red bush" or rooibos :)

37. Back in the mid-70s, a friend and I got to
experimenting with different liquor recipes, including several of our own creation. I don't remember them all anymore--well, I remember one!--which was Kahlua and green Gatorade. We called it the "gutterman." The thought of it now makes me nauseous, but it was so sweet, chocolate was bitter in comparison.

sorry for the quick OT!

as the alcohol flushed them out again :P

You could probably do the same with green coconut water. Just avoid the kind loaded with sugar.

6. Benefits are documented.
Honestly, I can't tell if it does make a difference as far as health is concerned. I usually get throw one bag of Bigelow Plantation Mint and one regular green teabag into a BIG cup. I think it tastes pretty good with the mint.

7. I prefer Mate
or at least mate is a current obsession.

now I drink one strong coffee in AM and mate other times.

Tastes good, has healthy ingredients, caffeine, alkaline instead of acid, no jitters, and doesn't appear to interfer with sleep

Looking for a good online source of different varieties.

11. I read some study found that if you drink 3-4 cups of green tea a day
you lose weight. I've been doing that and losing weight but of course I've been doing lots of other healthy stuff too.

I mostly drink it because I like it. I think I really get most of the energy benefits from eating more protein, fruit and veg., and cutting out all the crap I was eating.

13. I drink it literally by the gallon
Iced Green Tea mostly; I usually stick to coffee in the mornings and drink the green tea in the afternoons until I go to bed. My wife thinks it's vile, but I just drink it straight w/ no sweetener of any kind, just really, really cold.

I used to drink pop until I started drinking tea several years ago; now I don't touch the stuff. I feel alot better and I've probably dropped 20 pounds or so since then just by not drinking the sugar-jonesed pop I drank, and If anything, I feel better because of that.

18. no, I drink black tea
I like the flavor better and it still has antioxidants, but I don't drink if for health exactly - more for the caffeine. The health benefits are because it is a pleasant replacement for soda. I drink iced tea made in a gallon jar in the sun, when it's done I put between a half and 3/4 cup of sugar. About 10% of what is in soda. And it provides about the same $$$ savings as well.

So I get a sweet treat, stay awake, and stay somewhat hydrated (it is a diuretic but at least I'm drinking something). Not as cheap/low cal as plain water but hey it's not about being a monk.

I'm scared of fake sweeteners so diet drinks are out.

I went on a green tea bender because it is supposed to prevent all kinds of cancer and I'm a smoker. After three months of one tea pot a day, my nerves were shot from the caffeine and I was fucking sick of green tea so I gave it up. I'm now drinking pomegranate juice...prevents lung cancer in lab rats...

23. I have a book on green tea. It increases your metabolism 4%. It slows the growth
on new blood vessels (so you don't want to drink it if you are pregnant but do if you are afraid of having a tumour). Take the water off just before the boil. Only steep for less than two minutes or it is bitter.

28. Small caffeine boost that doesn't keep me up at night
I have gotten sensitive to coffee. It affects my sleep even if I have a small cup in the morning.
Now I drink only black and green tea. I won't touch black tea after 11 AM because it has too much caffeine for me.

I have not noticed the health benefits of green tea. But I think the benefits are subtle and you get them only after sustained periods of time.

Are you thinking of switching to green tea?

40. I like Rooibos just for the flavor.
I have one called "Rainbow Rooibos" because the loose shreds are three different colors. It also has a light vanilla aroma to it, though none of that added taste.

Rooibos is supposed to be high in anti-oxidants, so that may be partially what's helping you out there :)

I have a recipe for chai if you want it, and it uses green tea as well. It's also easily adjusted to taste :)

Chai
Makes 8 qts

2 bags.......Green Tea
2 bags.......Darjeeling
1".............Ginger
20............Cloves
30............Peppercorns
40............Cardamom Seeds
3 sticks.....Cinnamon

Brew tea in 8 qts water and discard.
Add spices & boil.
Simmer 2 hours.

You can pare that recipe down, too. I use large bags for the teas, so you could probably substitute two normal bags for each in the recipe and cut it down to "only" 2 qts :)

45. I drink it for the taste
I've long since given up caring about the supposed health benefits of particular foods, and so consume a balanced diet with as much natural as possible (no fizzy drinks...well except tonic water in gin...no margargines or low-fat spreads, &c.).

I can't abide green tea made with tea-bags though, it stews within seconds and tastes nasty. If made with leaves it takes a little time to infuse fully, but the end result is incomparably better.

46. I love tea
Edited on Wed Mar-03-10 07:54 AM by AsahinaKimi
My favorites are in order:
1. Pu Erh
2. Japanese Green tea (The kind used in Tea Ceremony. Powdered and very green)
3. Oolong tea.

There maybe benefits to them, and I have heard there are, however I love tea, so I tend to
drink it a lot. I have boxes and boxes of it, on my shelf, and living in San Francisco, with
a huge Asian population, its easy to find Tea shops here. There is one 4 blocks from my house.

I also love this Green Tea:

47. No. I drink black tea because I like the taste and it does not affect me as much as coffee.
I like various kinds of tea, including a few Chinese teas and cheap bag tea, but I'm not a green tea fan and I don't believe a lot of the "benefits" actually exist.
