1. curious as to how you found this |
|
It's a wonderful video.....
the reason I ask is my ex-husband, his brother and sister founded the company and invented the camera that took those shots.... albeit it's probably 9th or 10th generation..... worked for free many years there while they were getting off the ground.... now a corporation owns it....
thanks

your ex's family is Vision Research?
I've held that camera. I tell people it looks like a compact hand held vacuum cleaner, sans hose, and feels like you're picking up a lead brick.

8. Haven't had a chance to work with it |
|
An associate owns one.
It's funny; ten, fifteen years ago, I was telling anyone who would listen "Canon, Nikon, Kodak... they are all idiots if they don't try to steal the motion picture market from Panavision and Arri. They've figured out how to use CCDs to rival 35mm film in digital SLRs, now all they would have to do is figure out how to make them capture those images @ 24fps".
Canon is just NOW trying to market it's DSLRs as motion cameras.
Nikon is just NOW doing the same, but a step behind.
Kodak long ago conceded the pro camera market (they would have been the natural choice for this, as they are the ones who will eventually lose their film stock market to hi-def).
Meanwhile your ex's company not only solved how to make the CCD capture @ 24fps, they do it at 1500fps!
It was always largely a bandwidth/storage issue, but it's not like Canon, Nikon, or Kodak didn't/don't have engineers. What they didn't have was vision.

10. Kodak was our only concern.... |
|
but they are a corporation and at the time it was the 3 of them, me, another secretary and a Romanian who lived in South Jersey and his partners in Romania and a salesmen in California.... no corporate decisions they all worked well together and bounced stuff off each other..... the very first picture was of the 3 guys in Romania. It was a still picture but the first one..... the first motion shot was of a rose frozen in dry ice then we shattered it.... now the camera gets used everywhere....
you should go to the website and see the movies....

13. Fascinating. Yes, Kodak's lack of vision was especially frustrating to me |
|
Don't know why I cared really, lol. I was just eager to see it happen I guess.
I'm sure Phantoms were used on The Hurt Locker?
Fascinating story. What is the Romanian connection? A brilliant engineer or somesuch?

14. he was a brilliant engineer |
|
who came here escaping Chauchesku's horror
we put an ad in the news paper and out of all the engineers that were interviewed he was the only one that said he could do it..... he had friends in Romania that he knew would be of help.
sadly he passed away before a lot of the fascinating extras and advances were added by the rest of the Romanian team. they still work for VRI in Romania.
he worked out of his house in the beginning

baldguy. My sister and I just laughed our heads off. What a great ad even though I wouldn't feed my dog Pedigree if every one of those dogs were barking at my door :)
