DU Grammarians... a consult, please?
Having a discussion regarding the word "fit" vs "fitted" and could use a little help.

Would the correct use be "custom-fitted shirts for sale" or "custom-fit shirts for sale" ?

I know you might say "the shirt is a custom fit for him" but in that case, fit is more of a noun, no?

I guess the question comes down to, is "fit" ever the past-tense of "fit" or is it always "fitted" ?

This is giving me fits. :)

1. I know you're out there...
If I'd misused the term in an OP, I'd have heard about it by now, right? ;)

2. This grammarian says "custom-fitted shirts for sale" is an oxymoron.
"custom-fitted" is past tense, which means the custom fitting has already taken place. Therefore, it would be impossible to sell this shirt to the public, as it has already been custom-fitted for a specific person.

That said, either fit or fitted can be used as the past tense for fit, per American Heritage.

3. I think either is correct.
Even if fitted is past tense, that's fine because it is more a descriptor of how they were made. I really believe either can work for you.

4. I thought "fat" was the past tense version of "fit"

As in, I used to be fit but now I'm fat. No wait, that would make fit the past tense. Or... I'm so confused.

5. This isn't maybe the answer you're looking for, but "bespoke" is the best term,
and it avoids the grammar issue entirely.

Or say custom-tailored.

7. Custom "fitted" shirts for a 'custom fit'. Like 'oversizeD' load, not 'oversize' load. nt

9. I drive a Honda FIT
not a Honda FITTED. Does that help?

(Damned silly name for a car, if you ask me.)
