Total meltdown
On top of receiving threats and having our jobs jeopardized because we started a Tenants Association, apparently we are being penalized and charged interest on a state tax from approximately 15 years ago that we didn't file because we were getting money back in the amount of $50 and were moving out of state.

This has been a very difficult week on top of trying to work and carry three demanding courses in school. I don't think I can take much more of this.

Sorry, I just need to vent. Things here are not good right now.

5. Do you have a friend who's a lawyer?
I hope you don't have to face the IRS alone.

I'm so sorry! Doors have been closing for me since last July. Slammed is more like it. It's tough.

6. It's a state tax, so I'll be dealing the them
If I have a reasonable explanation, I can get the penalties waived, but not the interest. I have one, but I'm not willing to share it in public.

20. Don't Borrow Trouble!
We're going through something very similar here in Idaho, and I'm shocked to find how reasonably the tax people are treating us! What I thought was going to be a nightmare has turned out to be almost nothing!

I hope things go the same with you!

After sleeping on it, I decided to not jump the gun and wait to see what they are gonna do first. I have to stop automatically thinking the worst is about to happen. Thanks tons for posting that.

24. there's no statute of limitations if you didn't file
that's the law for federal, it may be different state by state for income tax

however, i've known people in my state who had the state come back a LONG time later and there was no statute of limitations because they didn't file at all -- several of those people claimed they didn't bother to file because they had a small refund due, an argument that makes no sense, why wouldn't you file if you thought you had money coming back even if it's only $50? it's your $50!!!! however, be that as it may, the penalty was not that much, in fact, i'm thinking for at least one guy he ended up owing zero because they did agree he would have gotten a refund and they just kept the refund and called it a wash

15. Sucky monkey
Sorry.

I second what a previous person said.. I thought there was a limit, about 10 years, on how far back they can go.

Also, If they would have been due to give you money back on that tax filing, what is there for them to charge interest on?

I hope the tenants assn is a huge success and that the persons persecuting you on that front do something non-dangerous but over the line enough to give you the legal fodder to take their shorts in court and send them crying back to their mommies.
