2. Read my posts in the thread. We're on the same wave length on this. |

And that sheep farm in Sicily...it was early December when I was there and there was plenty of mud and muck...those ewes were caked with it and I don't think they went thru a "sheep wash" before they were milked...I saw them make that cheese and it was really fun. The cheese was good, too!

How can serving human secretions be legal?

7. There must be laws on the books re using human products for food. |
|
I do not really know, but I would risk a bet.
Also, are there not a few cultural taboos against eating human body products being violated here?
There is nothing similar about breast feeding a child and serving breast milk cheese as a commodity in an upscale restaurant to adults.
But really, someone is having a laugh...it can't be true.

10. As has been mentioned here, there seems to be no qualms about OTHER human products |
|
being used by other humans, such as a human ovum or sperm. Both are excreted from the body. Just because they are taken into the body through the mouth instead of inserted by a doctor in a fallopian tube or a uterus should not make a big difference. And besides, human milk was ingested by humans through their mouths at one point in their development and nobody seems to care. In fact it is encouraged. So what's the big deal whether you are 3 months old or 30 years old ingesting the same liquid, albeit by different methods?

12. A sexual act is different than making a meal of human body parts/secretions. |
|
Breast feeding ends after two years and occurs between a mother and child--not between a mother and an unknown adult.
That this incident is so rarely heard of--selling human breast milk in gourmet meals--shows how strange making a meal of human body fluids is in the US.
This can't be true anyways.
I await further corroboration.

17. True or not, you must know from history that wet nursing was an active "industry" by women |
|
throughout history. And wet nursing did not occur between a mother and her own child. It occurred between a woman who had given birth and had extra milk to "rent" out to other, often more affluent, women's babies, for whatever reason. I think I read that Michelangelo, for instance, was wet nursed.
So there seems to be some commerce occurring in the history of wet nursing. Maybe we don't like it for that reason or for another, but this is nothing "really" new in terms of its profitability, it's just another variation on a theme. I don't particularly think it's a great restaurant idea, but I'm not pissed off about it either...

18. Marketing human breast milk to foodie adults is "really" new. |
|
Regardless of who is providing the milk--mother or wet nurse--it is for children.

19. Yes, it is new. But it is not a deviancy that we must shrink from. |
|
To me it is an aesthetic issue. In that sense, I do not particularly care to engage in it. But my aesthetic sense should not be confused with my other rational thoughts. It just doesn't rise to the level of being "disgusting" and I don't understand why it is considered so....

32. Oh, it occurs to me that the act of communion is taking the body and blood of Christ. |

The body is taken through the mouth.
The priests wisely reserved the wine for "themselves."
OK...got that...

34. Well, I won't get into the doctrine of transubstantiation, but my point |
|
Edited on Wed Mar-10-10 03:19 PM by CTyankee
is that the consumption of the flesh and blood of a god/man is seen as a supreme act of worship. It is a profound religious concept, morally necessary for salvation in the Roman Catholic Church. But isn't it, in essence, a celebration of an act of cannibalism? My point is that it seems strange that we hold the idea of making ice cream out of human breast milk as contrary to our "way of thinking" and yet we accept a ritual that elevates eating and drinking the human body as acceptable, even spiritual...
