Fellow science nerds: Who remembers "Connections" with James Burke on PBS?

What a great show. I'm utterly aghast that it was broadcast 32 years ago. :scared:

2. Remember it? Just got done rewatching it.
The original finally came out on DVD a few years ago so we rented it through Netflix. it has stood up well.

Was funny when he showed off the primitive GPS system.

The Day the Universe Changed, his other great series, is also available.

3. in high school, my english lit teacher showed
us some old episodes of "The Day the Universe Changed"...fun show...

To this day I can still plot out Europe's course of history with the invention of the printing press...

I remember it well. There was a Connections II a few years later which was also very interesting.

7. Fireplace!
That was my first thought when I read the title of the post. One of my most enjoyable Connections episodes. Burke's shows were examples of those rare bright spots of true, quality TV. It is difficult to believe that 32 years have passed since the series first aired.

11. My high school history teacher would play us episodes.
Great series - really emphasized why a good understanding of history is vital to understanding current events.

13. Connections 1 was great...
Edited on Wed Mar-10-10 12:27 PM by gmoney
Recently rewatched that... tried to watch the second series, and for some reason they weren't as good. I think because they're on bad 70s video instead of being shot on film like the first series. Also seemed like he was retreading stuff from the first series. Or maybe because they're half hour episodes.

It's a shame that they're so expensive to buy for whatever reason. Ensures only libraries and schools will buy them, rather than the masses.

14. Wonderful series
Watched it again about 6 months ago. Still a lot of fresh meat on those old bones.

Husband and I heard him lecture, just as brilliant in person. We have an autographed copy of the Connections book. Has pride of place on shelf.

15. I was a science nerd (minored in Biology). Why do I not remember this show??
Oh wait...32 years ago would have been 1978, and I was a college student at the time. And there were certain substances involved that no doubt kept me from more constructive pursuits.
:smoke:  :eyes: Is it currently airing somewhere?

16. Hah...
I don't remember it from back then, but it's been re-aired on some cable channel or another, or maybe PBS. I've only seen a few re-runs, but it is brilliant and well worth seeing. :)

20. Wonderful series - I'd love for it to be on now, just to watch the Fundamentalists
moan about the science that conflicts with their "beliefs".

23. I didn't like Connections 2 or Connections 3 as much
but The Day the Universe Changed remains one of my all-time favorite programs. I first saw it in the early 90s and couldn't believe how good it was.

28. I do. That show profoundly impacted me and continues until this day
It shows up most noticably in conversation when I'm trying to make a point but find that I have to digress about a billion times to connect every thing together. :sigh:

At least I know where I got it from.
