Music Recommendations Thread - a chance for all to participate
Edited on Wed Mar-10-10 05:13 PM by mvd
Here's how it works. Post a list of artists you like in response to this OP, and then hopefully someone will give recommendations based on that list. Because of DU's loose thread style, there's not going to be a set system - it's just a general sharing of music interest and an informal tone. Try to respond to the last list you see, though this isn't a hard rule.

I'm making my list in the OP, so if you want to recommend any artists to me, just post them in the same post as your own list.

I love a wide range of music. Examples:

I enjoy some big band music, including Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney, Bing Crosby (especially his Christmas songs,) and Bobby Darin

I'm a huge classic rock fan, including The Beatles, Elvis, The Beach Boys, Simon And Garfunkel, Joni Mitchell, Fleetwood Mac, CCR, The Who, The Kinks, James Taylor, Dusty Springfield, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Lesley Gore, Shangri-Las, Petula Clark, The Rolling Stones, Ronnie & The Ronettes, Peter, Paul & Mary, The Byrds, etc.

I love Motown & Soul, including The Supremes, The Temptations, Smokey Robinson, Dusty Springfield, Luther Vandross, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, The Four Tops, Sam Cooke, etc.

I'm a pop fan and enjoy Abba, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, Kelly Clarkson, Michelle Branch, The Corrs, Pink, Ke$ha, Katy Perry, Hey Monday, Barenaked Ladies, Vanessa Carlton, The Veronicas, The Dollyrots, Avril Lavigne, Kate Voegele, Kay Hanley, Tinted Windows, Lisa Loeb, Leslie Mills, Chris Isaak, Girls Aloud, B-52s, etc. There's a new artist named Matisse that I really like; her single is called "Better Than Her."

Enjoy rock music such as U2, R.E.M., Bruce Springsteen, The Cars, Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, The Bangles, Blondie, The Go-Gos, Pearl Jam, Hole, Veruca Salt, Garbage, Stone Temple Pilots, Jimmy Eat World, Damone, Sinead O'Connor, Cheap Trick, Green Day, Big Star, Sheryl Crow, The Hold Steady, The Gaslight Anthem, The White Stripes, Joan Jett, Alanis Morissette, etc.

I'm also a big fan of singer songwriter/indie such as A Fine Frenzy, The Pierces, Sarah McLachlan, The New Pornographers, Josh Ritter, James McMurtry, David Gray, Cindy Alexander, Anna Nalick, Aimee Mann, Hana Pestle, Brandi Carlile, The Indigo Girls, She & Him, Priscilla Ahn, Rilo Kiley, Butch Walker, Eisley, Eliza Gilkyson, Karmina, Camera Obscura, Tori Amos, Liz Phair, The Weepies, Bonnie McKee, Keren Deberg, Jo Davidson, Abra Moore, Fountains Of Wayne, Stacie Rose, The Like, The Shins, Nina Gordon, The Format, Loreena McKennitt, Enya, The Decemberists, Regina Spektor, etc.

I like some country such as Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Dixie Chicks, Garth Brooks, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, George Strait, Alan Jackson, Sugarland, Miranda Lambert, Little Big Town, Patty Loveless, etc. Good county is rootsy, but reminds me of folk music, and has a good grasp of human emotions.

And alt-country such as Neko Case, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Kim Richey, Wilco, Kasey Chambers, etc..

I like some modern R&B such as Rihanna, Alicia Keys, Toni Braxton, Anthony Hamilton, Sade, Corrine Bailey Rae, some Usher, etc.

Love classical, too: I know the main composers such as Beetoven, Mozart, Wagner, and Bach.

1. As to indie singer-songwriters...
....have you tried Regina Spektor? Somewhat reminiscent of Tori Amos with a Russian accent.

As to your list, in the rock catagory I'll second: U2, REM, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Garbage. And most of the other names you mentioned I enjoy as well.

but I can't stop listening to Them Crooked Vultures right now. They are a "supergroup" featuring Joshua Homme of Queens of the Stone Age on guitar, Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters and Nirvana on drums, and John Paul Jones the bassist/keyboardist of Led Zeppelin. I think they're pretty friggin' awesome.

Here's a vid of my favorite song of theirs(if you do the YouTube that is): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P2XH5KrrPw8

They hit well before the current crop of Celtic rock bands like DKMs and Flogging Molly, but their fusion of English folk and alt rock is awesome.

33. I'm currently listening to the Murphys' new live album that comes out on March 16.
Highly recommended! The "Shipping Up to Boston" closer includes a guest appearance by the Bosstones, and several songs, including the hilarious sing-along "Kiss Me, I'm Shitfaced" have three bagpipers backing up the band's usual player.

Edited on Thu Mar-11-10 10:01 AM by SteppingRazor
the album contains none of the same songs as the band's previous live album, Live on St. Patrick's Day From Boston, MA, s it's a good buy even for serious fans who already have the previous album. And if you're into Celtic rock but aren't familiar with the Murphs, it's a great primer because it features tunes from all of their albums.

47. Fiery!
I always love Leo's stuff because it's always so melodious. The first time I heard the armadillo album, I
was like someone who had a cloud lifted from his eyes.

I went out and got myself a 12 string (a used 1965 Guild 212XL that I still have), and in 1977, when I finally
was making some decent money, went out to Escondido and sought out Božo Podunavac, who was making Kottke's guitars
in those days. Božo and I are still friends, and he has now made around ten different guitars for me through the years.

I can do quite a bit of Leo's stuff, but nowhere near all of it. The master remains the master.

24. hmm,
currently I'm still digging on some bands that I've been enthralled with for a few years.

The last band I got into big time was Opeth, and I'm still digging on them a lot, but here is my list.

Opeth

Five Finger Death Punch(any metal suggestion that is similar in tone/style as these guys would be appreciated)

Demon Hunter(piano version of Carry Me Down is awesome), I still am loving the hell out of this band.

Ill Nino

Life of Agony-I hope they go on tour through the midwest sometime soon.

Senses Fail-I've been hooked on Can't be Saved, and Priest and the Matador for months. I first heard this group via Guitar Hero III, and I took a chance and they grabbed me.

Johnny Cash-I've been on 6month kick of his music.

This is about all I've been listening too lately, with a few exceptions of Napoleon Dynamite Soundtrack. My tastes very, I'm predominately a heavy metal/soft rock guy, anything from Slayer, to Chicago.

65. Huge metal fan here,
though I usually go for the more melodic type. My favorite Five Finger Death Punch song right now is "Hard to See," which I think you'll agree is a little different from a lot of their other stuff. I have the same problem with Diecast. They toured with Sevendust a while back and I thought they'd be a great band to get into, but so far I find I only really like two of their songs, "Hourglass" and "What's left to say?".

Anyway, if you find that particular metal style enjoyable, you should definitely check out Engel, not to mention the rest of my list below. A few artists you might be interested in that didn't make my list down there, based on FFDP, are still Engel, Diecast, Wicked Wisdom, and Nonpoint.

26. Some things that I'm listening to recentyly
Sonos, an a cappella group that is really cool. They do a cover of the old Jackson 5 song "I Want You Back", not in the original pop, happy style, but more like a stalker would interpret the song. They also have some other cool, upbeat stuff.

Somi, World Jazz singer/songwriter, new album If the Rain Comes First. Beautiful voice, tight, tight rhythm section, delightful stuff

Oldie but goodie, Brian Eno, David Byrne, My Life in the Bush of Ghosts. Really cool stuff, I especially like the exorcism set to music.

Country, BR5-49, fun country group, and if you want to get really bent a bit, Cowboy Troy, the originator of Hick Hop. You want strange, twisted country, get Dixie Hayseed's Hillbilly Tribute to AC/DC.

Classical music, you really need to get I Solonisti's album Orient Express. It was put out in 1989, but it contains a wonderful version of George Enescu's Rumanian Rhapsody No. 1. It makes you understand why the violin was considered by some to be the devil's instrument, just lovely stuff.

Poppy stuff, the Ditty Bops, beautiful harmonies, lovely lyrics, intelligent pop.

That's just the start of a long list, but I need to get to bed. Enjoy.

46. a few from me
The Waybacks, USA, play newgrass with a whole lot of other influences. They got some damn clever lyrics. Here's the live concert recording that turned me on to them: http://www.archive.org/details/waybacks2007-04-03.xcp0706.sbd.flac16

Hot Club of Cowtown, USA, who I discovered last year at the International Folk Festival in Canberra. They play wild western swing, the type that would make the dead get up and dance. Here's a concert recording: http://www.archive.org/details/HCOC2009-09-29

David Francey, Scottish-Canadian singer-songwriter, who I also heard for the first time at that festival. Simple, direct, delivered with crystalline clarity.
"The Waking Hour": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_UQT7dE5B8

The Dirty Three, a violin/drums/guitar trio from Melbourne. Totally mesmerising live. Hard to categorise, their music has been variously described as "long soundscapes and epic explosions of noise","soft and beautiful building to ferocious crescendos of ragged power" and "rolling waves of urgency and regret".
"Sue's Last Ride": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lxTSG0gLr0
"The Restless Waves": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6byhkpCFvfs

Paul Kelly, also from Melbourne and Australia's best beloved singer-songwriter.
"Careless" (with his son Dan Kelly on guitar) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02XQ_T
"Dumb Things": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RonQBp
"Song From the Sixteenth Floor": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gd1Ie370rHk

The Be Good Tanyas from Canada, exquisitely melancholy alt-country.
"Human Thing": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gd1Ie370rHk

50. I don't.
:D

Honestly, it's just really asking a lot for people to approach most of what I dig on just one listen. I could list a million bands/artists that I'm into but it's usually so outside the norm that anyone not already invested in the particular genre won't really be hearing what I'm hearing. I don't even like a lot of what I like based on first listens. I loved black metal for over a decade and Deathspell Omega was still so outside that niche that it took me years to really start appreciating them a lot like I do now. To anyone not into BM to start with I can only imagine what a band like that sounds like. It has to be almost pure noise. And I think most of what I like, black metal or not, must be like that. I've noticed that even the mellower stuff I listen to is odd (White Rainbow for instance...trance music for those meditating on cough syrup lol). Even my concept of mellow is warped! It's like being a raging Lefty...I'm so far from the Center I can't even recognize it anymore. ;)

I'm open to recommendations from others though, especially ones based on The Sun City Girls, Nomeansno, Melvins or the aforementioned Deathspell Omega. Good fucking luck!

52. Some of my faves: early R.E.M. and U2, Jayhawks, Connells, Cheap Trick
Johnny Cash, Beatles, The Call, Soda Stereo, also (guilty pleasures) cheesy 80's metal like Judas Priest, Scorpions, Motley Crue, Iron Maiden, etc.

Two northeast bands that sounded like they were from Athens or Chapel Hill.

60. Patti Smith was also an influence on R.E.M.
Maybe try her, too.

Molly Jenson is yet another for those who like singer/songwriters. There's a LOT out there if you look.
