Yes, I totally forgot about Kona Coffee. I wonder if our Safeway even carries it? I think I looked for it once..and couldn't find any. But, now, I will have to go and find out. I will mark it down on my list, thanks!

16. Perhaps a symptom of too much coffee
As I sit with my cup of "Guatemala-Antigua" Starbucks brand that I made in a French press. (From a Christmas gift sampler package, thanks much, way better than fruitcake)

A little strong, but good stuff.

One more cup of this stuff, and I'll be ready for GD.

21. No. quite teh opposite.
I'm here because DU is a group of of folks
with a RARE combination of 2 qualities:

A: they are optomistic, and genuinely have HOPE for the future.
B: They tolerate my presence.

I am -NOT- being a bully to you;
it's just a random chance that I've seen & replied to
several of your threads over the last few days.

Honestly, I don't know anything about you, but i've got a serious FEELING
that you are pretty cool. The kind of person that lots of folks
are glad to know.

It seems that I've offended you every time we've crossed paths....
How unfortunate.

"Offending you" was never my intent- you have *NEVER* posted anything here
that gave me any reason to consider you an 'enemy'.

I guess maybe you and I just weren't destined to "get along"?
If so, then I agree with what you said: that's sad.

22. So.. you are saying ...
"people who perpetrate "flavored coffee" should die of cancer and rot in Hell."

was not necessarily aimed at me.. (even though I started this thread)

and that maybe I am too sensitive, I should maybe get a harder shell because

"The world we live in is rude, heartless and bone-chillingly COLD."

Just trying to clarify this.. As for getting along, I am a very open person and get along with many many people, easily. In fact, I try to be a fun person, which is why I prefer to hang out in the lounge rather then do battle in GD, like some people do.

I don't mind humor, even poking fun at myself some times. I also try to chose my words carefully, because I don't want people to be angry at me ..or hate me cause I said something stupid. On the other hand, I would hope people would treat me the same way, and I know that doesn't always happen on forums.

I also know that misunderstandings happen, especially in a medium where we have no way of checking the intent of whats being said, and have to revert to smiley faces..and other such symbols.

Edited on Fri Mar-12-10 01:00 PM by Zomby Woof
I mean, um, that Richard guy.

My comments above were meant in the spirit of cartoonish outrage, and not a personal attack - I have a rep around here for really loving coffee, and sometimes feel I should reinforce that, lol. Wishing death or cancer on someone who drinks it, however, crosses the cartoon line - and if it's a joke, it's in extremely poor taste. My exaggerated 'outrage' was directed at the coffee itself, not the people who drink it.

Anyway... carry on. :-)

40. Have you seen how they make flavored coffees?
They take some chemical substance that looks as if it should be poured somewhere under the hood of your car (it even comes in a can that looks like a motor oil can) and sprinkle it on the beans.

Kimochi ga warui!

Seeing that cured me of flavored coffees for life.

No, these days I go for the real thing and the real thing only:

Peace Coffee French Roast
Peet's Garuda Blend
Caribou's Obsidian Blend

I like dark roasts with chocolaty overtones.

Nut flavored coffees seem to retain more coffee tones than the vanilla or fruit flavored ones --
at least that's been my experience when I'm served flavored coffees at friend's houses.

eta: if you want really good flavored coffee, brew regular beans and add a shot of Torani flavored syrup to your cup. CostPlus used to carry Torani and they probably have it at bigger Safeways, Andronico's, and Raley/Nob Hill stores.

Told me when he was on ship, they used to have to drink that "NAVY SLUDGE" that came from god knows where. Said He drank that stuff for years..and wondered why it had to taste so bad. He told me, if they had added Sea Water to it, it still would not have improved it.

Says, that every day now, he has to have the Hazelnut, cause its nothing like what he was used to drinking in his days in the Service.

61. It loses its oils rapidly
The flavor depletes quickly. No contamination or anything, it just gets stale quickly. Breaking the husk of the bean starts the breakdown and release of the oils, which are the heart of the flavor.

It actually preserves better in the fridge than in the freezer if you must store ground coffee. Just make sure it's in an airtight container.

(Pay me no mind - I jumped in on your reply to another poster with my previous post, lol)

Freezing won't harm it, it's just that refrigeration is preferred. Still, you don't really want to keep it frozen or refrigerated for more than 2-3 weeks, or it will just lose flavor. You're not in danger like storing meat or fish for a long time, in comparison.

You'll be fine. :-)

Freshly ground coffee is just infinitely superior in flavor to something you buy already ground.

And to be a real bore about coffee making -- you should always start with fresh cold tap water that has run for a minute. Never use anything but. Water that has been sitting in the pipe (or warm, god forbid) has different chemical makeup than fresh running cold water.

What kind of coffeemaker do you use?

"Mr Coffee" Coffee maker. I really wasn't that much into coffee until recently. I am a green tea kinda person. I love pure Japanese Green powdered tea, the kind they use in the traditional Tea Ceremony, but that stuff is Mega expensive. Well, it is, after all, shipped over from Japan.

I also love Chinese teas.. like Pu Erh, and I like Oolong tea. Other kinds of Chinese Black teas. I remember once trying that instant coffee stuff. Yuck, horrible! It put me off coffee for a while, then my friend came over, and gave me the coffee maker, and a bag of French Roast and showed me how to make it. Had some of that powdered creamer, that tasted like French Vanilla.

I was quite surprised. Kinda weird, that living in this city we have a STARBUCKS and PEETS coffee place every other block, and I never really went into them except to drop off a job application.

I did most of my Tea shopping at Japantown and in Chinatown. You CAN'T even find coffee in Chinatown.

75. No. What's wrong with it was already covered.
My wife drinks coffee every day and she absolutely will not drink whole bean coffee. Says it's "too strong" for her--even though I use the same amount of grounds for a pot made either way.

You can prove to yourself the quality of whole bean coffee by a real simple experiment. This won't cost you much but it will blow your mind. Get a coffee grinder and a bag of beans--Eight o'Clock is very good and not very expensive. Grind up four or five bowls of beans, put them in a container with a lid, and set them in the cupboard for two weeks. Make a pot of coffee. It will be good. Then grind a bowl of beans, but this time dump them right into the pot and brew the coffee. You will not think it's the same beans, even though they came out of the same bag.

Oh, and if you use cream? Please, whatever you do, do NOT use the powdered stuff. It doesn't taste very good. Choose either half-and-half or heavy cream.

58. Hate flavored coffee. Coffee IS a flavor. Good dark Italian or French Roast.
And yes, I am an addict. Why do you ask?

70. How can such a sweetie start the coffee wars of 2010?
When I can afford it I love Luzianne with a healthy dose of Vietnamese cinnamon added. Sometimes I also add some cardamom. Nice way to start the morning.
