6. Haven't tried that kind. Is it expensive like Patron?
I would guess so. I think Patron goes for about $50 for a 5th.

9. about $50 a bottle
Edited on Fri Mar-12-10 02:52 PM by pokerfan
I was introduced to it years ago in Ciudad Juárez. Their Añejo (extra aged) is perhaps my favorite but there's certainly nothing wrong with the crisp taste of the Blanco. But the Añejo is almost like a brandy and in fact, I prefer to savor it from a snifter.

ETA: to finish the story we smuggled some Blanco purchased in Juárez into the Sun Bowl by transferring its contents to a polycarbonate water bottle. Carried it right past security because it looked just like water. And so we sat in our seats sipping tequila and watching football. Designated driver, of course!

23. I'm with you on that
Añejos are like a good single-barrel bourbon or fine cognac. Plus, you were lucky enough to get it in Mexico, which makes a difference (see my post below).

22. Which was probably the reason she waited for the crowd to leave
Bikers, you know. They would have destroyed her liquor cabinet if it was possible. As it was, they roared out of there once the kegs were empty. My kind of wedding.

25. Tequila doesn't have worms
Mezcal is the liquor which does that. If it calls itself tequila, then it is doing so illegitmately. The worm is a marketing gimmick and a poor one. If an agave plant has a worm on it, it means it's not healthy. It's a marketing tool which began as some extension of the 'macho' culture in Mexico, and soon found favor in frat houses all over America.

I'm glad to see it's been growing out of it's college party liquor reputation over the last few years and gaining the reputation for the sipping liquor it truly is.

Especially if it's purchased in Mexico, rather than imported. But since that's not practical, you will need to pay up the nose for the good stuff in America. I recommend Corralejo, any varietal, but I am partial to añejos.

The Doña Engracia distillery near Puerto Vallarta makes the BEST tequila I have ever tasted. They don't export, but they are exploring international mail ordering. They even said on their tour that it is normal for countries to export their worst batches, so that explained why 99% of what you get in America is nasty, unless you pay $50+ for it. Doña Engracion makes Patron and Herradura taste like formaldehyde in comparison.

Real tequila, by law, must entirely be made in the Mexican state of Jalisco, with 100% blue agave (or if distilled in the nearby states of Sinaloa or Michoacan, blue agave grown in Jalisco), and distilled with no less than 38% alcohol, and no more than 40% (76 to 80 proof). If the blue agave is grown outside of Jalisco, it cannot use tequila in its name. Usually at that point it just goes generically by the varietal's name ('Reposado', etc.).

Lots of crap like Don Cuervo, when exported, will take a blanco (or sometimes called plata) and add a chemical coloring to make it look like a reposado. That is what makes people sick, and swear off tequila. Or it just makes it taste like crap, because they can't get past the first shot. Reposados and añejos, because they are aged, should get their coloring naturally from the oak barrels they are aged in, like whiskeys or cognacs do. (Many distilleries use old Jack Daniel's barrels for their aged tequilas).

I used to dislike tequila until I tried Doña Engracia. It was that good.

A picture from the hacienda where they make Doña Engracia:

So, no thank you, not anymore.

Maragarita pie is nice, though.

(although I love limes in general, they ruin tequila and beer, and I in no way endorse their presence in this picture, lol)

But I really did like the taste of a Tequila Sunrise. Why does something have to taste
like it will "put hair on your chest"? Besides..on me.. that just wouldn't look good.
