Self Depricating humor has never been so selfish, depricating or funny....

1. That's one of my favorite Stones' songs........
The vocals are just so slaggy and the music so low-slung that I can practically see the heroin dripping from my speakers.

2. And knowing the history, it's freakin hilarious...
Some girls give you children...

Pure self-directed Satire

3. Intriguing. I can tell from your post that you know more than I do about that album.
My only thoughts are that even though I have read critics call that a great comeback album, it is one of my least favorite Stones albums. Just to be blunt: It is a terrible album. It is even worse than "It's Only Rock and Roll" and way, way worse than "Black and Blue."

Your picture of Edie makes me wonder what I don't know.

Edie Sedgewick was most certainly the muse and inspiration for a number of songs.

4. It's that late-70's period where Keith Richards was off in heroin la-la land
Yet, Mick, in COCAINE la-la land, made some great music.

5. Oh, it's coming back to me: Emotional Rescue was his first "clean album" right?
I couldn't remember if Keith was even involved in "Some Girls." I know he virtually had no involvement with "It's Only Rock and Roll."

Thanks for the info!

It is a horrible album, no doubt. Why did critics like it????

6. Mick really did some innovating things on that album
Edited on Fri Mar-12-10 05:35 PM by Taverner
I mean, it wasn't Exile on Main Street, but it was Mick playing with buttons, seeing what did what...

Sure, a band that has been around since the early sixties shouldn't be fucking with the buttons, but fuck with the buttons he did.

I think its my personal bias: I like experimental.

I mean, you gotta love Slave off Tattoo You!

7. Anybody whose avatar pic shows the VU and Edie merits my respect.
I love discussing the Stones' albums. They are truly fascinating.

There is a really fascinating book about the making of "Exile on Main Street" that you probably know about. It is called "A Season In Hell with the Rolling Stones" by Robert Greenfield.

"Exile" is my favorite Stones album ever. But it is scary to read about what was going on in that band at that time. Wow.

8. Conflict breeds genius
Especially when you have a McCartney/Lennon, Jagger/Richards, Waters/Gilmour or Bowie/Alomar thing going on...

9. Yes, absolutely.
I love that you mentioned Gilmour/Waters. That was a fascinating combo.

What do you think of "Steel Wheels"? I know that is a late album, but it is one of my favorites.

10. Gilmour/Waters did some genius things
Imagine everything after Dark Side of the Moon, when the band realized him for the genius he was.

Even on the Waters Floyd (The Wall) he delivers significant emotive power that Waters should have appreciated.

11. Yes. THE WALL is one of my favorite albums ever. I know I'm in the minority, but I also love
THE FINAL CUT.

I don't know why Gilmour is ashamed of that album.

14. You are probably right. To my shame, I simply don't know their albums prior to DARK SIDE. NT

12. It's probably my favorite Stones album
For me, it's the most listenable from start to finish, and it is very enjoyable. "Far Away Eyes" is a hoot, indeed, and so is "Shattered" (She doo bee)
