Poll question: Mercedes or BMW? |
|
Edited on Tue Mar-16-10 06:17 PM by BlueIris
And please, nobody post "neither." This isn't that thread. Please feel free to elaborate about your choice.

4. Can't directly compare the two across the board. |
|
Have to be specific. What price point, and what sort of vehicle (coupe, sedan, convertible, SUV, 600 horsepower estate)?

5. I didn't want to make the poll that complicated. |
|
So people will have to respond based on their overall experience with one or the other.

7. Well I've owned a Mercedes (nice little SL droptop). I've found |
|
that in direct comparison, the Benz is usually the better car overall. However, I'd rather the M3 series of BMW over the comparable AMG class of Mercedes. I think my preference of anything BMW would end there unless there had to be a specific price point met.
Although, if I were really looking for a high performance German coupe, I'd buy an Audi R8. No question. And for my money, a high performance sedan would have to be the Jaguar XFR over the M5 and AMG E63.

I like BMW's smaller sedans (3er, 5er) better than their Mercedes competitors (C-Class, E-Class). BMW also has interesting array of sporty cars than MB. But if I were looking for a big sedan, I would prefer the Mercedes S-Class over the BMW 7.

22. Ever since I've lived in Germany most of the year |
|
I decided to buy locally made cars. My wife got a used Mercedes that fell apart in short order. We've driven BMW ever since, and don't regret it. The BMW dealership hates us. We keep our cars 15 years, and they want you to trade in on a new one every 2 years.
The first time I bought one was in 1986, and catalytic converters were optional, although you did get a tax break. I was considered very exotic, as I told them I didn't care how much slower it made the car drive, I wanted a car with a catalytic converter, and one that would not fall apart for ten years. It took 17 years to fall apart, as it turned out. I'm on my second one now (2003), and intend to drive it for another ten years. My wife is on her second one only because a truck demolished hers in 2008 (with her in it--which is why I opt for sturdily built cars for us--Germany has a LOT of very aggressive and tired Eastern European truck drivers on its roads, and she walked from her wreck).

I know several people who've survived collisions in Mercedes, but hadn't heard any stories about how well BMW fares.

We were both pretty rattled (I wasn't there), but when it came to getting a replacement, we said damn the expense, you can't buy a new life.

I'm still angry at BMW for abandoning F1.
:-)
(I'm not in the income tax bracket to buy a car from either company - at least, not a new one).

I guess I missed the point.
I'm not of the mindset that says "true Democrats can never have luxury items" but I guess it just struck me odd to see that poll here. And also no real explanation... is the question "which do you think is a better car?" or "Which would you buy if you could afford it?" or "Which corporate headquarters should be burned to the ground?" or what?

|
Edited on Wed Mar-17-10 07:49 PM by mnhtnbb
been pre-owned BMW's. I love the comfort on long trips and love the acceleration. Just for comparison, when I was shopping for my current car, I drove a Mercedes. No way. Squishy and slow to accelerate.
My first BMW was a convertible, second a 4 door sedan, and currently I have a station wagon.
On edit: I have kept each BMW for six years before looking for a new one; my current one is a 2007 I bought a year ago.

36. Heh. From what I've seen, Mercedes IS expensive to maintain, but so is a beamer. |
|
Mercedes allegedly holds up better over time, with maintenance. (I go back and forth over whether my need for safety/stability or awesome looking precision driving is more important.)

it's just an offhanded remark, don't know what my post count has to do with anything - it was a popular phrase in the 70s because the RAF used to always drive BMWs. You can get t-shirts if you are into extremist chic. I admit I am, a bit. http://image.spreadshirt.net/image-server/image/composition/6289529/view/1/producttypecolor/1/type/png/width/190/height/190

I saw it on cable. It is packed with stuff but doesn't make judgments. I guess they didn't realize you don't make friends by blowing shit up.

it's good, the book its based on doesn't make clear judgements either. Worth reading, since it goes into more detail about the cult like aspects of the group. The only person who comes off well in that book is the policeman who led the investigation.
