Holy crap! Reducing Champagne bottle weight 75g will cut CO2 emissions by 8,000 metric tons a year.

PARIS - The Champagne industry's trade association, the Interprofessional Committee of Champagne Wine, said Tuesday it is launching a new standard bottle to cut carbon emissions.

The new bottle looks the same as ever but weighs 835 grams, or 29.5 ounces, instead of 900 grams, or 31.7 ounces. That means vehicles transporting it will require less fuel.

The committee says the change will cut carbon dioxide output by 8,000 metric tons a year, which it likens to the annual emissions of 4,000 cars.

1. Did you post this in the environmental forum?
That is amazing. All glass bottles could be cut down in size.

2. No, I didn't. I'm not part of the environmental forum. Feel free to post it there!
It is amazing.

Really brings home just how many bottles of Champagne are produced every year. Frakking insane.

4. If they removed the extra glass from the inside of the bottle,
they could fit in more champagne... :)

5. And they might save even more CO2 emissions
Champagne bottles are as thick as they are partly for safety reasons--so they won't explode from overpressure.

Now, the average American generates 20 tons of CO2 per year, so if 100 Americans a year are killed in champagne bottle explosions, we could cut carbon dioxide output by 2000 metric tons a year, which I liken to the annual emissions of 500 cars.
