8. My granddad ate canned sardines that way too.
Edited on Tue Mar-16-10 10:55 PM by Lex
I remember he methodically laid out the saltines, the spicy mustard (or bottle of hot sauce), and carefully twisted the key and opened the can of sardines.

...stroke, but he always had a very interesting diet! Even at my young age, I thought his diet was exotic! The stroke was probably hereditary, it seems to run in my family

7. Air-sickness bags...
Failing that, I'd go with:
1: napkins
2: floors
3: the lap of the loud-voiced Bush-supporter at the table next to you.

Not necessarily in that order.

12. I've told this story before, but I was once on a plane with a young German couple
who'd brought their own food, two massive cans of sardines and some crackers. Not only was the smell almost more than I could take, the in flight movie was The Ya-Ya Sisterhood, and since the woman didn't speak English, her husband repeated every single line in German, causing her laughter to be delayed, and mine to get more and more hysterical as it got more and more absurd. Come to think of it, it did that awful movie some good.

Actually in that situation I had some empathy for the sardines.

air marshals on board? That must be a crime somewhere in the world.

13. Rye bread, mayo, and celery, with...
a little ground black pepper and cayenne or paprika sprinkled on it.

Or, in a salad Nicoise when you have no tuna.

(I think of them as an oily equivalent to canned tuna.)

Oh, there's always pizza for the anchovie haters.

18. hah hah! Tanks!
I asked that b/c:
-- I realized I once again forgot I had no dry cat food, so my cat wanted his dry cat food bowl filled after he had his evening canned food.
-- I remembered i had some cans of sardines so opened one to see if Cat would like some and then forced myself to also eat some out of the can so I would end up with an empty can and have ingested some healthy omegas and stuff.
-- I remembered my mom actually LIKES sardines and was going to bring her some but didn't want to make her an icky sardine sandwich.

Really, I think I try to eat a can of sardines about once every couple years, but I want to make myself eat more b/c they are supposedly nutritious in stuff that I don't eat enough of.

Them little spinal cords are what get to me, even finding them and throwing them away . . . . (last time I gave my cat a whole chopped up sardine he managed leave the cute little spinal cord in his bowel too.)

BOWL.

: )

27. I some times use Sardines for Onigiri
Onigiri is simply rice balls, you put a few sardines in the center. Sometimes I may add some sliced ginger to give it a little flavor. No need to add soy sauce, its salty enough.

28. Ritz crackers. I just had some tonight in fact
Funny you would mention it. I had a small can of sardines, there were I think 3 or 4 in there, smoked in oil.

Just had them with some low salt Ritz crackers, with some sharp chedder on the side, and a beer.

I'm like you, I feel I need to eat them more than I do for the omegas. I haven't had any for a really long time but saw them in the store a few weeks ago so brought some home and had some tonight.

Not the best meal I've ever had, but it did the trick and I'm full.
