heard this in Chicago last March at a free show less than 150 people-

Julie Fowlis was born and raised in North Uist ("yooist"), a small island in the middle of the Outer Hebrides, also known as the Western Isles, about thirty miles off the northwest coast of Scotland. Or, as Julie puts it: "Far out." She sings in Scots-Gaelic, the ancient language of her home, understood these days by less than 1% of the Scottish population (less than 60,000 people, total).
