Iggy Pop scares away Jehova's Witnesses
Came to my door, but were afraid. Maybe its the blasting of Iggy's "Beat em Up", although I'll bet the cover would scare them more.

I gave them a "Darwin bless you" and saw them off

1. Huh. We get them here, too, but a simple smile and, "Thank you, but I'm an atheist," works.

I have no interest in scaring people and it's my experience that irrational behavior on my part does nothing to ameliorate what I believe are irrational beliefs on their part. (I'm not rude to telemarketers, either, by the way.)

3. Cool. Their reaction to you living your normal life is THEIR problem,
if they have a problem with it.

7. As an exJW, I can assure you that your choice of Iggy Pop

is probably no more or less frightening to a Jehovah's Witness than several other genres. Imagine going to the door of a shack in Rednecksville where you hear Waylon Jennings singing America Will Survive; or going to a home with a fish on the door and Christian hymns being played (in some ways those were the worst).

The truth is, the whole going-door-to-door affair is pretty intimidating for the vast majority of Witnesses. And the one thing that is most frightening about it is the one thing I now wish more people would do: engage them in conversation, but make them back up their beliefs. Had more people done that (and I realize it is no one's job), I might have gotten out at a much younger age.

4. LOL...We used to invinte them in and put on Zappa's Dyna Moe Hum.
And just stare at them. They tended to get quieter and quieter, and eventually go away. Oh, for the days when I was evil.

5. is it some kind of get out the prayer week?
a car load of bible toters showed up here on Monday. Didn't give them a chance to id their denomination.

They were whining about the road and I just said "hey there is a phone number on the sign, calling could have saved you the trouble" I need one of those little signs that have the circle slash traffic sign over a cross and open book.

I waved her in my yard off when I saw her holding a Jesus. brochure -- "No religion. I'm not into religion." It worked; she left -- no argument.

11. Thing is, I like to engage them a little
When we hit that brick wall called "reality" I get bored.

But there are always two individuals, whether JW, Mormon or any religion really. Same thing worked for Buddhist One offs in Thailand.

One of them is the faithful. In his or her circle, they are considered to have rock-solid faith. Unshakable.

The other is one working on their faith. Someone who is unsure, and finds this whole thing a little unsettling.

Target the latter

28. I wish more people would be "brutal", if by that you mean...
... "try to make them engage in a real, two-sided conversation".

As I said up-thread, I was raised as a JW. I would have benefited from people asking me some hard questions. Very few people do so, not that I blame them; afterall, we did come to *your* house to interrupt *your* day.

These people are isolated and cult-like, so they really believe that if they think for themselves, they are being disobedient to God. They think that any other Jehovah's Witness who goes off-the-reservation by thinking for him/herself is a spawn of Satan, and literally will not speak to the person. So anything a person at the door says to them to make them think for themselves is a very good thing.

If by "brutal" you mean be an asshole to them, I can't go for that, even though I though think they deserve it in a sense.

15. Apparently for JW's
the 30th of March is the anniversary of Jesus' death (according to the flyer stuffed in my doorjamb this afternoon). Don't know how they arrived at that date, but I do believe that springtime is actually hinted at in the bible as to when he was born. So it is much closer to the "actual" date than the coopted pagan festival we call christmas (or xmas for those warring against such a sacred holiday). At any rate they are probably ramping up to the joyous day. Be ready for the onslaught.

I sent my wife out to talk to them--in her native German. Her English is fine, but she never let on that she understood a word of it. They gave up pretty soon.

Although imagine if Iggy were one of the 12 apostles?

They could have formed a hair band in the 80's and then later become leads in the 90's era revival of "Jesus Christ Superstar"!

THE WORLD'S FORGOTTEN BOY
Iggy Pop Makes Harold Ford Uncomfortable

Human joke Harold Ford was at that “rock & roll hall of fame” award dinner in wherever it is, Cleveland? And Iggy Pop just cold ran over there and started goin’ nuts, as proven by the picture of a television set somebody posted at the Balloon Juice web blog. Each day is better and better, for America.

When the JW's came to my door I always answered with the cat sitting on my shoulder.

They said hello, he yowled, they left.

That will scare them off. A while back I was living in Kansas City and these two JW would come around every time I was just getting out of the shower. Not everytime, but enough that they must have thought I never wore cloths.
