Do you have to care about the particular case to serve on a jury? Theres a good chance I probably wont care whats going on. The Jury Duty notice says I can bring something to read so I can imagine its going to be real boring.

16. Make sure everyone sees the title during voir dire
(if you don't want to be on that particular jury).

8. atlas shrugged is probably more tedious than
a trial for corporate tax fraud or something. isn't there a hundred page courtroom speech in there? or is that the fountainhead

5. If you actually get chosen for the jury you won't be reading anything.
and, when you're questioned by the judge and in the courtroom, you won't be reading. But, while you're waiting for this and that, by all means, bring something to do.

9. Yes
In the jury waiting room, I had books to read.

But when our panel was called into a court room, even though we never saw a judge, we weren't allowed to read.
What a bunch of crap--I can see if the judge came in, sure stop reading. But we sat there while the subject of the case made a plea bargain behind the scenes, and we still could do nothing but sit and be bored on very uncomfortable benches, until they dismissed us.

This was Cook County, Illinois about twenty years ago. It's probably the same now.

That should be good enough for you to be a peremptory strike (stricken from the panel for no reason).

18. First, try not to be a jerk.
You may have a chance to read while a jury is being selected, and during lunch and coffee breaks.

If you don't care after jury has been selected, and you are among the jurors, shape up or ship out if you're allowed to do so.

22. Even if you've read it before, I would recommend McMurtry's "Lonesome Dove"
Long enough to eat up a lot of time, but immensely entertaining and moving.

You won't even realize the time has passed, and you'll be thankful for the experience. This from someone who normally doesn't even like that genre.

If you're more the sci fi type, try Art Clark's Rama series.

24. Chickenhawk...

by Robert Mason. Great book! My husband recommended it when I was asking him questions about his time in Vietnam. He told me it was too painful to talk about, but suggested I read the book, because it would give me a real good insight as to what he went through. Mason does an excellent job of making you feel like you're right there with him.

25. Oh, come on, people - the obvious choice is The Anarchist's Cookbook for jury duty!
And make sure to hold it up high so everyone can see what you're reading.

Seriously, though, if you read while you are sitting in the jury box, you're an uncivil dick. Do your duty with your full attention and integrity.

28. Too many good ones to list, but if you want rather mindless fun-
meaning-not too literary- try any of the Stephanie Plum Novels! I forgot what the first one was titled.
