29. Good choice.
I had the very good fortune to see them perform live in '72.

J. Geils was the opener.

I measure rock concerts I attend by this benchmark.

Few measure up.

4. The Beatles (White Album)
.
Then and now my favorite Beatles' album.
.

.
"Hey Jude" was recorded during the same sessions, but only released as an A-side
on a single (with "Revolution" as the B-side -- how's THAT for a 49 cent bargain?).
.
"Hey Jude" was the first song I ever slow-danced to. That long, LONG coda (entire
song 7+ mins long)... dark basement... gorgeous olive-skinned silky-hair-down-to-
her-butt sweet Kathy Tucker in my arms -- nirvana.
.
If that song and that dance had continued during the intervening 40+ years, I might
be setting a record for "Longest Continuous Happiest Boy on the Planet".
.

67. From the the original ticket - one of my treasures, it's on my desk as I'm typing this:
Jimi Hendrix Experience
Thursday, 16 January 1969, 9 p.m.
Meistersingerhalle, Nuremberg, Germany

Row # 9, Seat # 7

Price of admission: 15 Deutsche Mark (my monthly allowance was 20 Deutsche Mark, arrrgh).

Are you a Hendrix fan? As far as I recall, the songs in that concert were from the Electric Ladyland album. At that time, there were so many concerts to go to - Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, you name it.

69. I was 9 when he died
I missed him in person, but I love his music.

He played, I believe, McFarlane Auditorium on the SMU campus in the late 60s. A beautiful place, and a relatively small venue (I saw the Knack there in 1979). I would have loved to have seen him.

71. He was one of the greatest, and won't be forgotten.
I have no idea how many records, cassettes and later, CDs of his I have worn out and had to replace. I remember one day my dad showed up in my room carrying a hammer (as I was blasting Hendrix with the windows wide open), and he gave me the choice of either turning down the stereo voluntarily or, as he said, he would turn it down for me. Permanently. :headbang:

83. I know. We had some kick ass music hiding behind the shit on the radio.
I saw the tribute band The Musical Box recreate the entire Lamb tour. They're the only tribute band with the blessing of all present and former members of Genesis and the band (and former members) have helped them with technical issues and provided costumes and stage manner coaching. For the Lamb, they also loaned them the entire set of 1,200 slides for the three-screen slide show behind the band. They (almost exclusively) use the same technology and instruments. The "almost" is because during the Selling England concert, I noticed a small computer display tucked in with the synthesizers.

As a child in 1947 he witnessed a car crash involving some American indians and claimed he saw a vision of an old mystical indian at the scene, how much creedence you can put into that I don't really know.

Morrison was particularly attracted to the myths and religions of Native American cultures. While he was still in school, his family moved to New Mexico where he got to see some of the places and artefacts important to the Southwest Indigenous cultures. These interests appear to be the source of many references to creatures and places such as lizards, snakes, deserts and "ancient lakes" that appear in his songs and poetry. His interpretation of the practices of a Native American "shaman" were worked into parts of Morrison's stage routine.

As usual, just a little dusting of snow down here. Sun is out and it's 47 degrees right now and supposed to get to 60 today and upper 60's tomorrow.

1:50pm -- George Morrison (Jim's Dad) Dies at 89 Permalink comment E-mail
By Bruce Daniels
Friday, 12 December 2008 14:46

Retired Navy admiral was responsible for bringing the legendary rocker to ABQ not once, but twice.
Retired Navy Admiral George S. Morrison, who commanded U.S. ships in the Gulf of Tonkin during the incident that led to the escalation of the Vietnam War -- and, oh yes, was the father of the late legendary rocker Jim Morrison -- died Nov. 17 in Coronado, Calif. at the age of 89, The New York Times reported earlier this week.

Yes, that's the father young Jim said he wanted to kill during a parricidal/Oedipal coda to his first classic hit "The End," and the father (along with mother, sister and brother) he claimed had died as he began his stormy career.

But it was Jim who died first, nearly three decades ago, on July 3, 1971 at the age of 27 under still-questionable circumstances in a Parisian bathtub.

George Morrison, the Times obituary tells us, was an instructor for secret nuclear-weapons projects in Albuquerque following World War II.

And that's how Albuquerque came to be the fleeting home of our own poete maudit -- not once, but twice.

Nearly 21 years ago, the Albuquerque Journal's own Toby Smith visited the Morrison's home at 8912 Candelaria NE (in an article titled "Jim Morrison Slept Here" in the Journal's now-defunct Impact magazine).

Jim Morrison lived in Albuquerque for two years, 1955 to 1957, when he was 12 to 14 years old, and he attended Monroe and Wilson middle schools, while his father was executive officer of the Naval Special Weapons Facility at Kirtland Air Force Base, according to Smith's sleuthing.

It was George Morrison's second stop in Albuquerque, the first time in the late `40s, and according to online biographical material, Jim Morrison was 4 or 5 years old when the family was here -- and it was here that his sister, Anne Robin, was born in 1947.

It also was in New Mexico at that time that Jim Morrison allegedly witnessed a car accident in the desert, where a family of Native Americans were injured and some were possibly killed -- an incident referred to in his biography No One Here Gets Out Alive and one which haunted his future songs, poetry and interviews.

But the 2006 book The Doors, written by surviving members of the band, quotes Morrison's father as remembering the incident very differently.

"We went by several Indians," George Morrison recalled. "It did make an impression on him (the young James). He always thought about that crying Indian."

The elder Morrison's relationship with his famous son was difficult, to say the least, the Times obituary noted.

"I had the feeling that he felt we'd just as soon not be associated with his career," the Times quoted George Morrison from The Doors. "He knew I didn't think rock music was the best goal for him. Maybe he was trying to protect us."

Came out when I was 17. I wasn't a Stones fan at all, found the album at a bargain bin for 3.99, and bought the album and put on the headphones. I was hooked, and I immediately began buying Stones albums by the truckload!!!

63. Only one choice?
Way too many to list one "greatest" album, but a great album from my teen years was "Teaser" by Tommy Bolin.

75. Still have my vinyl copies of both this and More Fun in the New World( and still listen to 'em)
on my turntable ( what are those, grampa?)......I was already in my early 30's ( yikes, I'm fuckin' OLD). I seem to be in the minority of X fans who think More Fun was even better than Los Angeles, but I do ( love 'em both though).

two of my favorites...

All the times I have seen X perform...I have yet to see them perform "The Have Nots" live...

I just keep on going to see them, anyway..

78. I was 15! I bought it at a surf record shop on Linden Ave. in Carpinteria.

and then Wild Gift, the same years as RLJ's Pirates, 1981

That surf record shop was the first place I heard the term "punk rock." It was also the first place that I saw a flier for a local show.

80. Carpinteria is still here...not so..
sure about the surf shoppe...but, maybe.

One of our favorite things is when visitors from out-of-state
hang around the house for a few days and then when we take them up the Coast to Santa Barbara (and we always do)
and then they see the Carpinteria sign and they ultimately say ..."Oh, is this that Carpeteria we saw on TV?" big:)

85. These threads make me feel OLD OLD OLD!!
I was into my 30s when I first heard grunge. And even though I cut my musical teeth in the 60s, I love 90s Alt Rock better than a lot of the older genres.

However, if you need me to pick one influential LP from when I was a teenager, one of my favorites (I think I had to buy 3 copies of it cuz I kept wearing it out!) was CCR's "Cosmo's Factory".

The last good LP they ever recorded!

I was 14 when that album came out and it changed my life.

91. The one and only Big O--Otis Redding. Sad to say he died
in my senior year of high school. He was from the area where I went to high school (Macon, GA), and there was a huge memorial service at the City Auditorium.
