Anyone else vacillate between being outgoing and reserved? Bold and shy?
The first time I took the Myers-Briggs Personality Test, about 15 years ago, I was marginally an Extrovert. Recently, I scored just barely Introvert. The only thing I answered differently was "do you have fun at parties?" At 22 I used to LOVE parties, but now I admit I often get bored at parties.

Sometimes I interact with people confidently and even sort of impulsively and/or boldly. But then other times I feel self conscious and self critical about how I interact with other people, and I go into retreat. Most of the time, it's in-between. Sometimes I'm outgoing and confident, and other times, I feel socially insecure and regret some of things I did or said when I was feeling more confident. Since I'm close to 40, this might be a lifelong trait.More than one person has told me that I'm "hard to read".

Does this sound like anyone else, here?
Or am I just an oddball? (wait, don't answer that!) :)

1. Mine's situational.
I'm fine one on one- I can hold my own with anybody. I can give speeches in front of thousands of people without a hint of nervousness. But small groups? I get very insecure and feel like I'm being judged or subtly excluded, even when I know perfectly well I'm not. Part of it is my hearing issues, I have a very hard time following a conversation when more than one person is talking, because I don't filter background noise at all well. So I tend to seem reserved in social settings.

3. That does kind of sound like me.
One on one is usually very comfortable, even if the person is sort of difficult. But I usually feel like either I can't compete in a group conversation because I can't get attention or a word in, or I must compete in a group conversation.

I think lately, I don't care as much, so I just don't compete anymore.

6. An introvert living an extrovert's life
I have consistently tested as an introvert since I first took the test in the very early 80s. My career path (fundraising/p.r.) requires that I put on an extrovert's personality every day. At the end of the work day, I lock my door behind me, pull the shades and try to recover.

7. I have tested as an Extrovert with Myers-Briggs but, usually I score
as an Introvert. I can fake a pretty good Extrovert, but it takes a lot out of me. I have to stay holed up for a couple of days to recuperate.
