Check out my redneck hoopty (pics)
Edited on Mon Mar-22-10 12:55 PM by Tobin S.
Just picked it up today and immediately drove it to a mechanic :D. I told him to do an inspection and make a list then give me a holler :yoiks:. I'm hoping to get it good running condition for under $500, but we'll see.

This is a 1988 Ford F-150 pickup. It was the base model for that year. A stripped down truck, no extras except for an AM radio and a spare tire :). It's got a 4.9 liter straight six motor and a 5 speed manual transmission. Just over 74000 original miles which I thought was pretty cool. I bought it for sort of a project and mainly to haul a fishing boat. I've wanted an old truck like this for a long time, though. Me and a friend are going to do the body work. Check 'er out.

Hillbilly Express

Built Ford Tough

BOOYAH! Just a little surface rust. Sand that baby down and throw some primer on there and it'll be good as new. :D

Wanna take 'er for a spin?

1. With a FLOOR shifter! No three-on-the-tree for you!
Add a shotgun in the rear window, a cooler of long-neck beers behind the seat, and a couple of dogs in the bed, we're good to go!

I like it, keep adding pictures as the project progresses, or regresses, depending on what the mechanic finds out.

:hi:

2. Yes, sir
I'll get some pics up after we get her painted. We're going to go real high dollar and get the black primer over bondo.

3. I had that exact model!!
GREAT TRUCK!

Mine was a 1988 F-150, two tone gray and silver, red interior. Mine had a red vinyl floor, so you could just hose it out...a true work truck.

Mine was 6 cylinder, and I loved the 5 speed on the floor.

God those pics bring back memories!

I think you will like this truck...good luck with it!

4. Thank you and I already like it, even in it's current state
I wouldn't trust it over 60mph right now, though. :D I'm sure I had this big goofy grin on my face as I was driving it this morning.

5. I'll tell ya what...
for 22 years old...that truck looks alright!

One thing...if you don't put a cap on that for weight, make sure you throw some bags of sand in the back if it is not 4WD...that truck is really light in the ass and can be difficult in the snow without the added weight.

6. Gotcha
I don't know if I'll be driving it much in the winter, though. It's not going to be my daily driver. It's more of a toy than anything to me and I'm sure I'll be hauling some stuff here and there. It's unavoidable if you own a truck. :)

especially if your friends know you have a truck.

7. Very nice. And it's a truck truck...
...not one of these plush interior poseur trucks. 300 cu. in. six, I remember those. Ford was kind of known for its shitty paint jobs then. I suggest an enamel top coat, not just primer, as it will repel the rain.

8. We'll see how it goes here with the body
I'm interested in fixing the rust now more than anything. We're not able to do anything beyond primer, and I wouldn't be surprised if I find myself pricing paint jobs later this spring, but right now I'm not sure if I want to put that kind of money in it.

13. That is the orginal hood! :)
The paint job on the hood was shoddy for some reason. I heard it's common for that year. All of the original paint just pealed off there and that caused the surface rust. That's rust not paint or primer.

17. wow! that is a real contrast - I've seen just hoods crap out but that...
it totally looked like somebody changed it out - too bad you live in a wetter climate - around here rust is not an issue, you wouldn't even have to worry about it!

For that old of a truck, that interior looks to be in great shape. And a manual tranny, too, that's even better.

Edited on Mon Mar-22-10 02:07 PM by guitar man
It even has hand crank windows! :applause:

I had a '96 model which was the last year for the 300 (4.9) straight six. Probably the most bulletproof engine ford ever built, mine had over 200k miles when I traded her in and it was still running like a champ.

Congrats on the truck! :)

21. I've lived in Tennessee and Kentucky...
.
...and always kinda preferred dive bars... but, until a co-worker
used the word "hoopty" very recently, I had never heard it.
.
Is it just a non-sequitur term for a cheap banger?
.
Does it come from something like, "He hoopty makes it to work" or
"He hoopty would make it all the way to the Piggly Wiggly AND back".
.
Personally, I've been feeling like a hoopty lately. Can I use the
term for attitude/health descriptive purposes?
.
.
Boy, I am one hoopty mofo lately.
.
I think it says it all.
.
.
.
Floor shifter for the win!!! Always hated column shifts.

32. "Hoopty" is ghetto slang for "old beater"
Usually a large old beater like an '82 Caddy that's being held together with bubble gum and duct tape.

I miss those things (and was just thinking about them a few days back) -- work so much better than rolling down the whole damned window when you just want a little air circulation.
