Spokane/Coeur d'Alene Indian author Sherman Alexie wins the Pen/Faulkner award.

::::::::

To quote, VP Joe Biden, this is a big F****g deal! This is a great honor not only for Sherman Alexie orIndian writers, but for all Indians. Sherman writes about Indians, for Indians and from an Indian point of view, a master storyteller who weaves pain and humor through his work so skillfully that you can't tell if those tears in your eyes are from laughing or crying.

a brilliant beautiful writer who has taught me more about this country's sinister truths than any other author.

11. hey Ptah
How have you been?

I thought it weird bizarro world stuff to see the MT Griz in the NCAA tournament while our UA Cats were left out for once. Been a helluva run though.

18. Things are gong well for me and mine, Bill.
I am enjoying this tournament more than I thought I would.

If I knew anyone in Tempe,
I would call them to find out what
there is to do this time of the year.

It was nice to see the Griz!

7. Longtime fan of Alexie here
I used to live in Seattle, and discovered him in the mid-90's when I worked at B&N - "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight In Heaven" came out around then. My favorite novel of his is "Reservation Blues", mainly because it is about musicians, and partly because I recognize some of the real bars and dives he incorporates into the story.

Congrats to Sherman Alexie. PEN/Faulkner is a major award.

I interviewed him once, talked to him on the phone for about an hour. I grilled him too, he doesn't miss much, lol.

and funny(at least to me), it was weird though...in my Creative Writing class, we were reading Lone Ranger and Tonto Fist Fights in Heaven, so when I came into my Social work class, he was sitting there with the teacher, and I knew who he was right off the bat...but hell, half the class recognized him really fast.

15. Indian humor
He's awesome at it. I think Adrian C. Louis is the master though. I heard Sherman grew up wanting to write like Adrian, which isn't a bad thing at all. I think Sherman is really funny too. Tragic and funny as I mention at the link. Lone Ranger and Tonto (the short story) was a big influence on my first published short story.

13. he's part of a trend I think
Of Native writers whose work appeals to everybody. You see that with even the older writers, their work now has branched out and is very appealing to just about anybody. My friend is a poet and he was featured in Poets & Writers just recently and had his latest book released by a major poetry press. You'll see alot of Indian writers get acclaim in the next ten years or so. Probably film too. Don't be surprised to see an Indian filmmaker or screenwriter get nominated for an Academy Award one of these years.
