2. I love the bagpipes!
Are they played now a lot in Mexico? I don't usually make a connection in my mind between Mexico and Scottish bagpipes.

Thanks for the post!

4. It is not very common,
Edited on Tue Mar-23-10 09:22 PM by Xipe Totec
but the gaitas is an instrument that transcends cultural barriers.

Here is the story behind the Mexican Bagpipes:

And here are some gaitas from Celtic Spain; Galicia

3. Rufus Harley
.
COOL name to begin with.
.
How's this? Black man out of Wilmington, Delaware who played
jazz on the bagpipes (died about 4 years ago).
.
Might be more jazz bagpipers now... but I think he was the
one and only for a LONG time.
.
PBS in the Philadelphia area used to treat us to good video
recordings of him in between shows (probably fundraiser time),
but I haven't found a really good full recording of him online
yet.
.
Here's an interesting little snippet of him doing a Coltrane piece.

6. A friend's high school aged daughter bought a set of pipes online -
I would hate to be near his house while she is learning to play them....but she is a natural on wind instruments, and has learned several of them on her own in a few weeks.....

14. Look, I took flute lessons long ago-ths student before me was a small girl
learning clarinet. She had no ability and no ear, but she had great power. Sounded like torturing cats.

9. Wild ass guess here - but is this group connected to the
Irish immigrant soldiers who joined the American army during Mexican-American War and who then crossed over to fight on Mexico's side?

PS:

My cousin just reported the birth of his sixth child.

The second redhead in his brood.

Yes, I am a descendant of the colorados; the readheaded Irish fighters.

Not all of them died that day at Churubusco.

13. My Dad told me about the San Patricos and I made my kids
watch the movie about them that came out a few years back. American history is nowhere near as tidy as the textbooks would have us believe!
