Black and white in Alabama. "You're my BEST ol' grandpa." |
|
Today I was told that by a 5 year old black kid. He had just successfully read the lesson for today with no mistakes. He got "100". He gave me a hug.
He's in the kindergarten class that I volunteer in as a teacher's assistant.
I'm a 68 year old white guy way down here in coastal Alabama. Essex is 5. He doesn't care that I'm white and he's black. It doesn't matter to him. I don't think he's even aware of it. And it doesn't matter to me, either. :-)

THIS is what we're aiming for: a truly colorblind society!

2. Preschool. SMALL-town Connecticut. My best friend... |

. ...MAY have been the only Black kid in town. . He called me "Vanilla Cake". I called him "Chocolate Cake". . It freaked both our moms out... and they told us to STOP THAT before "somebody" heard us. . We were good little kids, but couldn't see any reason to stop... and we didn't. . But, MOM!!!!! LOOK at him!!!! . . Not colorblind -- but color was only skin-deep for us. .
