Black and white in Alabama. "You're my BEST ol' grandpa."

Today I was told that by a 5 year old black kid.
He had just successfully read the lesson for today with no mistakes.
He got "100".
He gave me a hug.

He's in the kindergarten class that I volunteer in as a teacher's assistant.

I'm a 68 year old white guy way down here in coastal Alabama.
Essex is 5.
He doesn't care that I'm white and he's black.
It doesn't matter to him.
I don't think he's even aware of it.
And it doesn't matter to me, either.

2. Preschool. SMALL-town Connecticut. My best friend...

...MAY have been the only Black kid in town.

He called me "Vanilla Cake". I called him "Chocolate Cake".
.
It freaked both our moms out... and they told us to STOP THAT
before "somebody" heard us.

We were good little kids, but couldn't see any reason to stop...
and we didn't.

But, MOM!!!!! LOOK at him!!!!

Not colorblind -- but color was only skin-deep for us.
