4. that's sad. he was a cool guy. wrote some interesting stuff, was pals with Sam Peckinpah:
Movies that never got made.....

'Summer Soldiers'.

Hugely popular TV actor Robert Culp was also a writer, contributing a two-part episode to Peckinpah's 'The Rifleman' as well as a number of episodes for his own high-rating show 'I Spy'. Culp's screenplay 'Summer Soldiers', a contemporarily set thriller about mercenaries involved in a coup on a Caribbean island, got as far as being announced by Warner Brothers in the trade presses as their next project with Peckinpah.

However, Peckinpah's public feud with Warners and producer Phil Feldman after they snipped out entire sections of 'The Wild Bunch' wholesale purely to bring it down to a two hour running time put paid to any future projects and 'Summer Soldiers' was unceremoniously shelved.

5. He turned in a nice performance on an episode of "Everybody Loves Raymond"...
...the one where he and his wife (Katherine Helmond) were planning a divorce, and daughter Patricia Heaton couldn't come to terms with it.

The role called for Culp and Helmond to be very calm, relaxed and pragmatic about the decision, and Heaton to react less toward what was best for them and more toward her own hurt feelings.

He treated her like an adult, rather than "console" her, and it was just a very different way of dealing with that kind of situation. It was kind of like "We've both accepted it, now it's your turn," but in such a cool, calm and collected way that it really offset Heaton's reaction.

Thanks for the memories, Mr. Culp. Vaya con Dios.

Love Harlan Ellison's writing. There are two others that Culp appeared on that have been repeated, one was 'The Architects of Fear', don't recall the title of the second one but it had to do with crawly thingies that were out to destroy him.

The RTV network also airs 'I Spy' weeknights. :-)

8. Goodbye, Mr. Culp: RIP
A very talented man, in many different ways. He wrote, he acted, he directed. He did comedy, he did drama, and he did voiceovers on documentaries. He was smart and he was kind. He was one of my major crushes in the 60s, and someone I followed in his career to the present day. He will be missed in most regards, but he left behind a body of work that I can enjoy for many years.

14. Due to the estate tax?
As it stands, isn't the situation that if someone dies in 2010, there will be no estate tax, but if they die in 2011, it reverts to the old rates?

15. Heh. I knew someone else read that Wall Street Journal article.
If you didn't, it's worth searching around for.

I'm not sure if the estate tax issues are the reason--my feeling is that a lot, a lot, a lot of famous folks currently circling the drain are about to make the final swirl, including the infamous Lindsay Lohan.
