Best love song ever?
I generally go with Naive Melody (This Must Be The Place). This time I'll give "I'll Cover You" from "Rent" the nod. And you?

45. A post apocolypse steam punk version of "Muskrat Love" maybe.
One percussionist would be smashing human skulls collected from a field of death, and the rest would be playing oil drums, wrecked and radioactive car parts, and a giant harp as big as a suspension bridge.

The microphone pickups would be carbon microphones salvaged from ancient telephone handsets and the outputs of these would be fed into a huge multi-stage compressed air amplifier powerful enough to explode nearby houses and puree entire sides of beef.

The lead singers would be two blue-skinned androgynous mutant giants screaming at one another face to face and breathing fire.

Yeah, I could make this work...

there's a cover of a willie nelson song by the pet shop boys, you were always on my mind, is the main lyric, it might just have the title "always" but a love song w.out sarcasm is sort of like a day w.out sunshine

prob. the best "love" song ever to my twisted mentality

9. The Cranberries - Linger
Not the best, but one that popped into my head.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G6Kspj3OO0s

If you, if you could return
Don't let it burn, don't let it fade
I'm sure I'm not being rude
But it's just your attitude
It's tearing me apart
It's ruining everything

I swore, I swore I would be true
And honey so did you
So why you were you holding her hand
Is that the way we stand
Were you lying all the time
Was it just a game to you

But I'm in so deep, you know I'm such a fool for you
You got me wrapped around your finger
Do you have to let it linger
Do you have to, do you have to
Do you have to let it linger

Oh, I thought the world of you
I thought nothing could go wrong
But I was wrong, I was wrong

If you, if you could get by
Trying not to lie
Things wouldn't be so confused
And I wouldn't feel so used
But you always really knew
I just wanna be with you

And I'm in so deep, you know I'm such a fool for you
You got me wrapped around your finger
Do you have to let it linger
Do you have to, do you have to
Do you have to let it linger

And I'm in so deep, you know I'm such a fool for you
You got me wrapped around your finger
Do you have to let it linger
Do you have to, do you have to
Do you have to let it linger

You know I'm such a fool for you
You got me wrapped around your finger
Do you have to let it linger
Do you have to, do you have to
Do you have to let it linger

Righteous Brothers - Soul & Inspiration

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDyOulteViU
You're my soul and my life's inspiration
You're all I've got to get me by
You're my soul and my life's inspiration
Without you baby, what good am I

I never had much goin'
But at least I have you
How can you walk out knowing
I ain't got nothing left to keep you, baby

You're my soul and my life's inspiration
You're all I've got to get me by
You're my soul and my life's inspiration
Without you baby, what good am I
Oh, what good am I

Baby, I can't make it without you
And I'm telling you, Honey
You're my reason for laughing, for crying
For living, for dying

Baby, baby, I can't make it without you, baby
Please, I'm begging you, baby, baby
If you go, it will kill me, I swear
If I can't live without you

You're my soul and my life's inspiration
You're all I've got to get me by
You're my soul and my life's inspiration
Without you baby, what good am I
What good am I
Oh, baby
You're my soul and my life's inspiration
You're all I've got to get me by
You're my soul and my life's inspiration
You're all I've got to get me by
You're my soul and my life's inspiration
You're all I've got to get me by
You're my soul and my life's inspiration
You're all I've got to get me by

another favorite:
David Gray - The One I Love

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=44tVAJVmQCM
Gonna close my eyes
Girl and watch you go
Running through this life darling
Like a field of snow
As the tracer glides
In its graceful arc
Send a little prayer out to ya
'cross the falling dark

Tell the repo man
And the stars above
You're the one I love

Perfect summers night
Not a wind that breathes
Just the bullets whispering gentle
'mongst the new green leaves
There's things I might have said
Only wish I could
Now I'm leaking life faster
Then I'm leaking blood

Tell the repo man
And the stars above
You're the one I love
You're the one I love
The one I love

Don't see Elysium
Don't see no fiery hell
Just the lights up bright baby
In the bay hotel
Next wave coming in
Like an ocean roar
Won't you take my hand darling
On that old dancefloor

We can twist and shout
Do the turtle dove
And you're the one I love
You're the one I love
The one I love

and One More:
Johnny Rivers -Baby i need your lovin

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqfEQwrR5Wc
Baby I need your lovin'
Baby I need your lovin'

Although you're never near
Your voice I often hear
Another day, another night
I long to hold you tight
'Cause I'm so lonely

Baby, I need your lovin'
I got to have all your lovin'
Baby, I need your lovin'
Got to have all your lovin'

Some say it's a sign of weakness
For a man to beg
Then weak I'd rather be
If it means havin' you to keep
'Cause lately I've been losin' sleep

Baby, I need your lovin'
I got to have all your lovin'
Baby, I need your lovin'
Got to have all your lovin'

Empty nights
Echo your name
Sometimes I wonder
Will I ever be the same

Oh yeah, when you see me smile
You know
Things have gotten worse
Any smile you might see
Has all been rehearsed

Darlin', I can't go on without you
This emptiness won't let me live without you
This loneliness inside me darlin'
Makes me feel not alive, honey

Baby, I need your lovin'
I got to have all your lovin'
Baby, I need your lovin'
Got to have all your lovin'

Baby, I need your lovin'
I got to have all your lovin'
Baby, I need your lovin'
Got to have all your lovin'

19. Look What Love Has Done To Me by Suzy Bogguss

Look What Love Has Done To Me lyrics
by Suzy Bogguss

(Rob Mathes/Stephanie Lewis)

Where once the moon was just a rock spinning in the sky
Where once the stars were only tiny points of light
Now the moon looks like it's heaven's shining pearl
Now those stars, they look like windows into another world

Look what love has done to me, look what love has done
There's poetry in all I see, look what love has done
And my heart is dancing through each day
My soul is running free
Look what love has done to me

Where once each breath was just a sign of aching emptiness
Where once I hardly felt the beating in my chest
Now each breath feels like a precious kiss of life
Now inside me beats the winds of a thousand butterflies

Look what love has done to me, look what love has done
This must be how it's mean to be, look what love has done
And my heart is dancing through each day
My soul is running free
Look what love has done to me

And I can't tell was that a violin, or did you say something
Was that lightning striking where I stand
Or did you just reach out and take my hand

Look what love has done to me, look what love has done
There's poetry in all I see, look what love has done
And my heart is dancing through each day
My soul is running free
Look what love has done to me

The Reprise is a killer, though. I love that show, and I hate it with a passion at the same time.

Another love song that comes to mind is something from the beginning of my relationship with darkspouse: Cindy Lauper's Time After Time. Yeah, I'm sappy.

ETA: I can't believe I forgot Chicago!! Purists I know hate it as a ballad, but "You're the Inspiration" has always been one I had to sing along to.

61. Songbird
For you there'll be no crying
For you the sun will be shining
‘Cause I feel that when I'm with you
It's alright, I know it's right

And the songbirds keep singing
Like they know the score
And I love you, I love you, I love you
Like never before

To you, I would give the world
To you, I'd never be cold
‘Cause I feel that when I'm with you
It's alright, I know it's right

And the songbirds keep singing
Like they know the score
And I love you, I love you, I love you
Like never before

Like never before; like never before.

63. 50,000 Miles Beneath My Brain
Ten Years After
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UNHqUhGEFZM
I want to know you
I want to show you
I want to grow you
Inside of me
I want to see you
I want to free you
I want to be you
Inside of me
Love me 50,000 miles beneath my brain
Love me 50,000 times and then again

Can you love me with a thousand eyes?
Can you see right through my bones?
Can you kiss me with a thousand lips?
Can you melt a solid stone?
Can you hear me from a thousand miles
When you're screaming at the stars?
Can you pull me up to Jupiter
When I'm all hung up on Mars?
Burn my eyes with your flame
Let your world spin free
Let it go, baby
I'll do the same
All depends on me
Let it go
It's all the same
What with jewels that you can't see
Love me, love me, love me, love me, love me, babe
Bring it on home to me...

peace~

65. John Lennon's "Woman," because it was probably the most honest love song ever written
People didn't like the fact that Yoko was all he wanted. He didn't care. That's how love usually works.

77. "You're the Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me"
Gladys Knight and the Pips.

I've had my share of life's ups and downs
But fate's been kind, the downs have been few
I guess you could say that I've been lucky
Well, I guess you could say that it's all because of you

If anyone should ever write my life story
For whatever reason there might be
Ooo, you'll be there between each line of pain and glory
'Cause you're the best thing that ever happened to me
Ah, you're the best thing that ever happened to me

Oh, there have been times when times were hard
But always somehow I made it, I made it through
'Cause for every moment that I've spent hurting
There was a moment that I spent, ah, just loving you

If anyone should ever write my life story
For whatever reason there might be
Oh, you'll be there between each line of pain and glory
'Cause you're the best thing that ever happened to me
Oh, you're the best thing that ever happened to me
I know, you're the best thing, oh, that ever happened to me
