At 5'7" he is nicknamed "la Pulga" (the flea). His small stature is the result of a congenital growth hormone deficiency. The Barcelona soccer team drafted him at age 11 and brought him to Spain where it paid for the treatment his family couldn't afford back in Argentina. He is now, arguably, the greatest soccer player of all time.

Okay, concur with you that La Pulga is arguably the best active footballer right now.

But I wonder if he will ever match Edson Arantes do Nacimiento in winning three World Cups? (For those who have never heard the name, he is best known as Pele.)

Messi could have problems in South Africa because Argentina's players are not overly fond of Maradona, who barely qualified Argentina for the WC this June.
