3. Cake > Yeast
Cake donuts are much better at retaining coffee.

Best Cake donuts in the world? The homemade ones at Paul Bunyan's in Wisconsin Dells, WI.

which I also love. These have sour cream or buttermilk, depending on whose making them, that give them this nice little tang in the flavor. Very yummy. :9

11. I prefer plain but I like ones with powdered sugar or cinnamon
I love Entenmann's chocolate-covered donuts but I never feel well after eating them. I suspect that a layer of soap forms where the frosting meets the cake surface, giving them their oddly soapy but addictive flavor.

58. it has to do with sanitation and how
long/old the glaze is.

The glaze machine I used would literally, if I cleaned it by hand take me roughly 4hrs to clean and that was half my shift. I was "encourage" to never clean the glaze machine...I worked in the Bakery for 7months or so, only cleaned it once.

Same thing with jelly filled donuts...

yeah those would need to be cleaned out, I would agree
so if our glazed donuts have a slight formalin flavor we should know the glaze machine hasn't been cleaned in a few months?

77. Protein sprinkles,
I have to remember that one, the bakery was just looking out for its customers, everyone needs a little protein...I can get behind that, :D

The jelly machines I used were similar, but they were a lot easier to clean(about 1hr total), but we were short handed and the bosses made us cut corners. I tried my best, but I believe nowadays a lot of donuts all ready come premade, all you have to do is heat them up, and put the glaze/frosting on them.

73. Donuts are one of the major food groups, but you have to stay out of the chains...
to find a good one.

NO Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme. Anyone who would go there, even in desperation, would eat a frozen bagel.

Yer local donut shoppe or bakery is the only place to find a proper donut, and even there it's not easy.

I will be flamed and consigned to the depths of hell for this, but 7-11 donuts are pretty good, 'specially the filled ones, like raspberry. They are made by local bakeries contracted to make 'em, and are delivered around 2AM, so they are never as fresh as the ones just coming out of the donut fryer. But, they are amongst the more acceptable ones, and the Boston Creme beats hell out of Dunkin Donuts' lame attempt. Bigger, too.

No more Kripsy Kremes within reach of Desolation Isle where I now live, but I have no fond memories of the all too perfectly shaped, tasteless little disks.

81. Try the Fractured Prune's donuts.

Most locations are in the Maryland area. They are dipped and made to order, meaning they come out hot. A little slice of heaven.

82. There's an indie donut shop in my town that makes the BEST donuts I've ever had.
Their menu keeps some of the usual standards and the rest is esoteric and changes constantly -- they've had cookies-and-cream filling, peanut butter creme filling, Oreo-crusted donuts, chocolate glazed with marshmellows on top, glazed with almond-crust.

And every single one is sinfully delicious -- an orgasm for the taste buds.

Half the reason I smoke is so I don't get cravings and go place a binge order.

85. Kane's, Saugus, MA. Chocolate glazed...
Best donuts ever. Hole in the wall donut shop in the middle of nowhere. Huge following. They make dozens of different donuts and pastries but the glazed are top of my list.
