Jamie Oliver's much anticipated show, 'Food Revolution' premiered on Friday, where he attempts to transform the eating habits of the residents of Huntington, West Virginia, the most unhealthy city in America. 4. He kills his own case before the kids come in
"Thankfully, chicken nuggets are not made this way in this country."

First problem: the tastiest single part on the whole chicken is the skin. I could call Tyson or House of Raeford right now--hell, any of the big chicken companies--and order a barrel of chicken skin. If I offered them 75 cents a pound they'd be all over themselves to sell it to me. Were I to then take this barrel of chicken skin, season it well and deep fry it, then serve it with flavorful dipping sauces, I'd have the next great bar snack. It can't be any worse for you than nachos.

Second problem: the "nasty bits" of bone, sinews, meat that's too hard to economically debone? Ever seen cans of chicken stock, powdered bouillon, soup base? Guess what it's made from? If you said "the stuff Jamie Oliver ground up to demonstrate how disgusting chicken nuggets are," you would be correct.

And the third problem: Jamie Oliver's homemade chicken nuggets have a hell of a lot more calcium in them (because they contain ground bone) than the ones McDonald's serves a hundred tons a day of.

6. Is calcium bad? I thought it was good.

Anyway, I bet the lawyers made him say that little disclaimer

7. Calcium is very good
The guy was all "look at this, we ground up chicken bones--isn't that awful?" Well...actually, no it's not. Calcium is good for you. And when you grind up the bones you get them into a state the body can accept as food.

8. I noticed, too, that the audio quality in that disclaimer was just a hair off.
I'm guessing it was added long after the show had been edited and packaged for air.

14. Since he didn't tell the kids this, I know it was added in post
But I did think it was pretty funny when EVERY KID said he'd eat the chicken patties.

"And why WOULD you eat this horrible food?"
'We are in West Virginia, you stupid SOB...you've seen the Beverly Hillbillies, right? We eat stuff like the Clampetts do all the time.'

19. "Take some facts. Put 'um in a blendaah. Spin 'um about a bit..."
He seems unprepared for any resistance, then he makes the story about the resistance he is getting.

11. I've watched a few clips from his show and I'm so depressed.
Lots of dumb redneck types who don't want change "'cuz their system werks good and they don't want no ferriner tellin' 'em what to do."

It seems like they are welcoming the obesity, heart disease and diabetes. Idiots.

13. I'm watching the first episode on Hulu
his lunch: freshly prepared chicken drumsticks & brown rice. Problem: he needs 2 breads not one.

their lunch: processed pizza crap, but it's okay because the crust counts as 2 breads. :wtf:

at least the preacher & that one family believe in what he's doing....

16. Darwinism in action. Their dripping contempt for common sense and intellect
wins no sympathy here. Unfortunately I think that Jamie may have an impossible task ahead of him with that lot. He should have started in a slightly more forward thinking community.

18. I've only seen the first part of it
but it's striking how Jamie assumes that rationality, reason and common sense will sway people to his side. That probably tends to work in Europe, but this is 'Murika. Yes, some people will have a light bulb go off, but there is a giant segment of the population that thinks that Reagan, Palin and Glenn Beck speak the truth. So good luck with that, Jamie. You're not in Essex anymore.

20. Or a wealthy one
There's a reason people who live in places like WV eat crap: they're fucking broke and if the shit is even slightly edible, down the hatch with it.

Go to Orange County, CA, and show rich kids that chicken nuggets demonstration, and you'd get a different result.

12. Actually, that was hilarious.
Mr. Preachy Food Man didn't get the answer he thought he'd get. But he forgot - that was West Virginia. I'd bet a few of those kids had seen food killed, dressed, and prepared. You want to make an impact with something like that, don't go to one of the poorest states.

"Mr. Preachy Food Man." Yeah, that elitist Jamie Oliver is trying to help these people avoid dying at a young age from strokes, diabetes and heart disease. What a scumbag! :eyes:

It's one thing to be a rugged individualist who rolls his eyes at people who talk about healthy eating habits. Few people see the hospital bed scenes where these "I don't like rabbit food" people who are too stubborn to change gasp for breath and die.

17. That's just how it came across.
Didn't call him elitist. Preachy and elitist are two entirely different things. And it just struck me as funny. Sorry you don't like that.
