My old Maytag seems to be dying. What is a decent washer these days
in the $600 area?
I have been skimming the internet and the Whirlpool Cabrio seems to be well thought of.
I would like to buy real American. Is there any suggestions.
I will check back tomorrow

1. Whirlpool is CLOSING the Indiana plant and moving production to Mexico
I'd personally prefer you buy a LG or Samsung believe it or not.......

2. I know. That is one of the big reasons I really don't want to buy Whirlpool
Maytag closed a very productive plant in Galesburg a few years back. Then Whirlpool bought Maytag and closed their original plant. All work was sent to Mexico. So I have a hard time buyng one of those two names for anything. (BTW when I bought my Maytag it was as American as - well- Obama)

3. The day is coming when these stupid companies will realize that by sending production OUT of the
Country, there will be no one to BUY their crap.

5. Check out the Garden Web Laundry Room

Laundry Room FAQ Page http://ths.gardenweb.com/faq/laundry/

These folks live eat and breathe laundry. You can get some great advice there.

6. get a front-load - no matter the brand
you won't believe how much you'll save on water (and detergent!) and how much cleaner your clothes get!

7. I've had a Frigidaire front-loader for several years now
It performs well, uses less water than a top-loader and is less expensive than comparable brands. Front-loaders also hold more laundry for the same footprint than top-loaders and the clothes are not as wet when the wash is done.

10. Front loaders leave water standing at the bottom of the seal.
Which grows mold. I have a couple of friends who are dissatisfied with the front loaders.

I recently bought a GE profile with Infusor (tm) technology. It swirls the clothes gently and does not have a post in the middle. There are three models available, I got the middle one at a scratch 'n' dent price of $488.

Model No. WPRE6150KWT

12. I leave the door open when it's not in use
I don't have a mold problem.

13. Many years ago...
.
...a friend and I were in a laundromat and he placed a comforter in a huge
front-loader. He closed the door on a corner of it, thus it didn't seal and
leaked ALL over the floor.
.
The attendant was SO nice about it, turning down his offer to clean up the
mess and reassuring him that "it happens all the time" (undoubtedly, she was
just being nice with this line).
.
There was a GREAT Italian deli in the same strip mall, so my friend went down
and got her a half-dozen cannoli. When he presented them to her, she declined,
saying, "Oh, thank you, dear -- but I'm diabetic."
.
My friend was having such a really, really bad bad day.

14. Thankfully, mine won't start if the door isn't shut completely
But I should probably keep some cannoli around just in case. ;-)

9. Maytag is the Toyota of the appliance industry
Go to your library and check issues of Consumer Reports.

15. Maytag was run into the ground by its last CEO
tried to raise profits so he authorized changes in quality and BINGO - instant shit company.
I have no faith that Whirlpool would build the same quality machine.

16. You'll really want to check Consumer Reports for this.
It's just the sort of thing they're best at. They test all the models, and publish the results.

18. Our spin cycle sounds like a jet engine. Feels like
we shouldn't oughta stand in front of it.

19. why?
A lot of the older ones are really pretty simple to fix. Dryers especially, but washers too have replaceable parts.

Might be a hell of a lot cheaper...

20. Might be easy to fix,
or as with alot of the older models, they're not as energy effecient.

Saving 15-20 bucks a month between water and electric and a new washer pays for itself within 2-3 years.

I'd say it depends on how old the washer is deciding whether or not it's cheaper to fix.
