Ladies: Skinny jeans after 40?

I'm looking for the perfect pair of jeans and I can only buy one pair now. I'm bored of boot cut styles, and am looking at either straight leg or skinny leg jeans.

I'm slim, and can wear skinny and have them look good, but I'm also 40 and don't want to fall into the 'mutton dressed as lamb" syndrome. Don't want to dress too young for my age.

So what say you? Skinny jeans or no? Straight leg better?

:hi: and thanks

6. hey Tobin
Thanks! :)

I guess the best thing to do is not be lazy and resort to Internet shopping, and go into a store and try the darn things on.

Going well beyond age 29.

I've seen women in their 60's that looked great and still stunningly sexy. If you got it, flaunt it indeed. :applause:

10. Who cares what your age is? I have a Levis 501s shape and style
and I wear them with no regard whatsoever for what others think. I _KNOW_ I feel and look good in faded 501s, a turtleneck, braided leather belt and nice boots -- sometimes paired with a scarf for a splash of color or a nice blazer if it's chilly.

That "mutton dressed as a lamb" thing is bullshit perpetuated by people who can't bear the thought of a woman who won't have her daily apparel dictated to her by strangers who don't live in her skin.

52. Thanx, Stuntcat! Here's hoping the age rule book can get flung out the window for GOOD!
I'm sick and tired of a bunch of idiots telling women what we should look like, be we young, old, fat, skinny or anything inbetween.

As for the "getting old", Corporate-Market-Based-System-America loves to throw us crones on the scrapheap because we've figured out we have nothing left to prove, and we're not buying into their game anymore. So we're virtually ignored or told we're "too old" or as the original post says "Mutton Dressed as Lamb". If I can pass on anything to young women, it would be to embrace yourself, your life and f%^k anyone who judges you for how you look or dress. Of course, it unfortunately has taken me years to get here myself. It's a journey we all must make in our own times--but remember, I'm on the other side of it, rooting for all of you!!:hi: :hi:

16. To formally give a completely impartial and honest opinion
a person needs to be assessed sans clothing first to fully appreciate the underlying physique of the potential clothes wearer, then a practical decision can be made one way or the other.

22. If you're slim, I definitely think you can wear skinny jeans at age 40.
What is really in style over here this spring are light blue denim shirts, it's the "got to have it" item... comfy in size and worn outside of the jeans, unbuttoned. Pair that with a classic white t-shirt and ballerinas, and you're good to go.

Definitely not "mutton dressed as lamb", but simply stylish!

have seen denim shirts - which have been on the stylish-verboten list for decades - around more, too.

I like it that skinny jeans can look good with ballerina flats as well as heels...

27. if you got it, go for it.

A friend of mine did some modeling when she was younger...and she's now in her early 40's and always looks fabulous.

She said the key to looking good when you are older is to not over do it.
when you are young you can show some leg, arms, bosom, ect...and get away with it, and can show a lot of skin/tight stuff and not look trashy if it's done the right way.

What she does now is...just pick ONE area to show off. If you've got tight jeans, then wear some good shoes to show to show off your rear end, but cover up the cleavage a bit more.
If you want to wear a short skirt, then cover up the arms. If you are going to wear a tight or sleeveless blouse and show your bosom, then play down the pants.
She always looks great, classy, but sexy...and still looks young.

I think women actually look older when they do too much, cuz it's LOOKS like you are trying to look younger, instead of just looking good.

My Mom is 62 and dresses great...not too old. People mistake her for someone much younger. I really don't understand why some women do that to themselves. Of course, too short or too tight is not good on anyone but I think skinny jeans are fine.

59. I just bought a pair of their 'slouchy skinny' jeans.
They are a little looser in the hips and thighs. Just a little.

The only problem with Banana Republic is that their jeans are always way too long for me. To get them hemmed right, a tailor has to do it. Add an extra $20 to the price.

36. I live in Arizona -- many EXCEPTIONAL things about that, but...
.
...fashion sense is not one of them in WAY too many cases. Mind you, I've seen Rubenesque
and BBW in skintight, skin-revealing clothing who looked exceptional and hot... but that
does NOT include big ol' floppy beer bellies in midriff-baring outfits nor skinny jeans on butts
that haven't gotten anywhere near the condition of "toned" since their owners were of the
age to do the old "dog dragging down the bikini bottoms" Coppertone ads.
.
This is true in males here, too -- but not as pervasive. Yesterday, in the grocery store, I
saw what appeared to be a redneck hippie in his forties with a beergut that resembled the
Gulf of Mexico dressed in a loose muscle-shirt with armpits cut out to around his beltline.
.
I healed up by shopping for non-food items like laundry detergent for a while.
.
One thing about skinny jeans, though (and Spandex, etc.) -- be you 18 years old or 60...
you'd BETTER have a pretty flawless ass as they are extremely unforgiving -- the least sag
is magnified like they're Hubble telepants... and if you have no ass or hips, the look is not
"skinny" -- it's "emaciated".
.
THAT said... I have never understood (OK, I understand it, but I don't UNDERSTAND it)
the fascination of older men with younger women. I have ALWAYS preferred the company of
women anywhere from my age to 15 years or older (or more) -- for all the reasons that all
reading this should be aware of.
.
And things ARE changing (although it may be just another temporary swing of that cultural
pendulum) -- women who USED to be considered "mutton" are now referred to as "cougars"
.
Nice kitty. You go for WHATEVER you feel comfortable with!!
.

72. Your post reminds me of "The Dude" and Walter Sobchak, a little.
Where did you used to live?

Anyway, the age thing is such a cliche. My ex boyfriend of several years is 37. I'm 39. His new girlfriend is 40.

75. Walter Sobchak? Being one of the few...
.
...that hasn't really gotten the cult status of that movie, and having been
a long time since I've seen it, I have no idea whether that's a good thing,
a bad thing, or whether I should continue to roll on Shabbos or not.
.
Raised in small-town Michigan. Escaped from there (but for a two-year return
ten years later) shortly after high school and was considerably healed by a
3-1/2 year period living in Nurnberg, Germany (my ex-wife was German -- and a
considerably OLDER woman than I... by a good 14 days or so).
.
. Since then I've lived for several years in Tennessee, Michigan, and D.C.,
twenty years outside of Philly, and the last 12-13 or so in wonderful, GLORIOUS
Tucson.
.
. So beware!! I'm probably old enough to drink and vote. And get a discount
on my car insurance.
.
You're right -- most people DO end up with the same age-level... but that
doesn't mean that many men don't at least wish/dream for that trophy wife/SO as
they themselves get older.
.
And that's what I don't understand. Give me a woman with some life experience...
preferably close to the same amount as mine (though not NECESSARILY so... even
if VASTLY different in events and perspective, so we have some common bonds and
some knowledgeable differences to discuss, differ on, enjoy, and roll our eyes
at concerning each other.
.
. An extremely healthy portfolio wouldn't be nothin' to sneer at, neither.

37. Skinny jeans! lol
I was recently persuaded that I should wear skinny jeans as I'm so tiny. Firstly, it was ridiculous as I always buy used jeans. I had to go to a real store! Blah. At 5'4" and 103 lbs, a size 0 didn't even fit right in the ass...a tad too baggy. It took me a few days to realize the problem...
At 58, I have no ass!
I was blaming the cut of the jeans...the pocket, etc....all the brands were the same.

I'll stay in my regular used jeans.....Shopping day from hell...:o Funny memory.
At my age, I wear what I want....I do have 'tight' jeans...it's not about age...
You're only 40...go for it!

peace~

48. Avoiding
mutton dressed as lamb is a greater and greater fashion sink hole as I age...if you look good in them, wear 'em! Be wary with the top...too juvenile can become 100% wool.:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

49. if you have the figure, then skinny jeans
I personally wear nothing but bell bottoms...I knew the fashion would go out of style, i have enough pairs to last me 10 more years until they become popular again ha

53. Skinny jeans don't do it for everyone.
Edited on Sun Mar-28-10 08:48 PM by Shell Beau
They are for certain body types, IMO, BUT they aren't for certain ages. They are appropriate for whoever looks good in them. If you look good in them, GO FOR IT!!

ETA: after reading the thread, if you are going for a more classic look, bootleg will always be timeless, but I love skinny jeans. I say get them.

61. People hate to be told this but I think it's true for capris as well...
they are more flattering to some body types than others. For some, they make your butt look bigger and your legs look shorter. They're like horizontal stripes, lol.

56. I'm 55 and I love wearing my skinny jeans.
I felt funny when I went shopping for them because I had to go to the juniors department, and everyone trying on clothes was in her teens or twenties, mostly teens. Their mothers were younger than me! But I didn't feel so bad when I saw that some of these young women didn't have bodies that looked good in skinny jeans--I think they looked better on me. :-)

57. My wife bought a pair when she was 50, and they looked great on her
She's 5'10" and weighs just shy of 130 pounds, and it wasn't easy to find a pair of jeans that
fit her well. We finally found them in London, of all places. Straight leg. She's now 58 and
still looks 20 years younger, so the jeans look pretty good on her.

63. it's a size not an age, if the jeans fit wear 'em
if you can fit into skinny jeans i don't see why you wouldn't wear them

i never heard anyone refer to wearing JEANS before as "mutton dressed as lamb," what CAN you wear at age 40 if not jeans? i think you're allowed to wait until you're 80 and have had your first stroke before the only thing you can wear in public is sweatpants/pajamas...

65. If you're thin, skinny jeans are great no matter your age. The key is flattering style and fit
not age.

Life is short, why should others care about what you wear at what age, really?

(meaning that you should do what you like and what pleases you) :D

68. Who cares what the fashion police say?
Fashion is just a sexist conspiracy.

It's all bullshit anyway. I sometimes watch that show "What not to wear" and it just pisses me off. Could some of the "victims" do better? Sure, but they don't need to be treated like shit in the process.

78. Do you have the legs for it?
If YOU think so, then go for it

If YOU don't think so, then don't

Skinny jeans, like many other articles of clothing, require the confidence and attitude that goes along with them. Do not expect the pants to give you said attitude. But if they do - then hey, wear them.

79. spend extra dollars to buy a pair made in the USA
they look so much better. Don't know where you live but Goodwill or Plato's Closet have great second hand jeans for great prices. But you have to be patient for the right pair to show up at Goodwill.
