Cat parents: Do you prefer Frontline or Advantage?

I have six cats, all over 9 lbs (that's an issue with Advantage, not sure if it is with Frontline).

I've used Advantage in the past, but am leaning toward Frontline b/c it says it also kills flea eggs, not just fleas.

Any thoughts or input very much appreciated. :hi:

1. Frontline Plus. Waterproof and kills ticks.
But, I'm a dog person. If a cat doesn't go outside (and of course RARELY gets a bath, lest the owner have a death wish) Advantage is fine.

For me it comes down to what I can get the deepest discount from my vets for. I usually pay cost, which can fluctuate according to how much they order for their clinic.

4. We have one fella who goes out, all the ladies stay in...
And no, I *do not* bathe the cats, unless there is a great need to do so (one cat has a tendency to get into sticky situations, literally).

I have a gift certificate to Amazon and can get one dose for all six; then I'd like to just have to take care of the boycat who goes outside regularly...

Thanks, flvegan. :) (For the longest time I had NO IDEA your name was "florida vegan" - just thought it was some unintelligible flv-egan name. Lol. I'm dense that way. Assuming, of course, it is "florida vegan :D )

10. It is florida vegan, yes.
Can't blame you for not bathing cats. Short of a full suit of chain mail armor.

2. Frontline +
My cat is indoors-only, but I still dose him, just in case. Though he didn't have any all winter, I'll probably dose him next month

5. I have five indoor, one indoor/outdoor.

I'm willing to try Frontline just because Advantage didn't work too well for me last year - could NOT eliminate all the eggs, it seems, and had some awful flea situations.

We've moved, so the opportunity to start anew, flea-eggless, is here. I am interested in Frontline's claim that the eggs are killed off, too.

Thanks for your reply, realisticphish!

8. I used to work in a pet store
and from customer comments, FL+ is great for eggs. I've never had a problem, but Iago's also never had fleas at all. What sucks about your situation is that even if you dose the I/O cat, he can still bring fleas back with him to jump onto the other cats

3. NEITHER ONE!!! Get REVOLUTION!
Don't get any more insecticides and put them on your pets. 'Revolution' eliminates fleas overnight. I have five cats and overnight all fleas were gone and I haven't seen a flea on them for over nine months. Revolution also kills heartworms, ear mites and certain intestinal worms. It is extremely safe for your pets because it isn't an insecticide. Directions say you put one a very small vial of the liquid on their back, above their front legs and to use it once a month. I've given my five cats only two doses in nine months and they haven't had one flea. This stuff is a miracle product.

You can buy it from a Canadian pharmacy without paying a high vet bill to get a prescription. It comes in several different vial sizes depending upon the weight of your animal. I bought the Revolution package for a large dog and was able to use one dog dose for all five cats. I got a needle-less syringe from a local Walgreens so I could measure the exact dose. Revolution for dogs and cats is the identical medication so all you have to do is give the recommended amount (in milliliters) depending upon the weight of your cat. It also works just as well for dogs.

This medicine kills both fleas and eggs and you will NEVER have to worry about fleas again.

6. Revolution is generally well-tolerated (selamectin)

Revolution is a prescription-only, FDA-approved medication available only through a veterinarian – and is NOT a pesticide registered by the EPA. Although topically applied, Revolution is a systemically acting, broad-spectrum parasiticide that has a well defined safety profile combined with excellent efficacy to help protect your dog and cat against a wide variety of parasites. Your veterinarian is the best source of information to ensure the proper healthcare of your pet.

Revolution enters the bloodstream through the skin. Concentrations of Revolution in the blood and tissues prevent heartworm disease and prevent and treat roundworm and hookworm infections. Revolution selectively redistributes from the blood to the skin and other tissues, where it provides protection against fleas, flea eggs, and ear mites.

7. thanks for the info, AnArmyVeteran
I'll check it out! I have bought Advantage from www.vetshoponline.com before (based out of Australia), they have fantastic prices. I'll see if they have Revolution or look for another source.

13. You can also get it from New Zealand without a prescription
it costs less there as well. I had been using advantage or Frontline every 2 months here in Florida and neither got rid of all the bugs (and my poor cat Oberon has a flea allergy). One dose of Revolution and I haven't seen one bug in six months!

12. I used to use Advantage, now I usually dust with diatomaceous earth
and if that doesn't work I use Revolution. The Advantage stopped working for most pets in Florida.

14. Vectra
It came out a couple of years ago. My vet recommended it. I only needed it for two months, as my cats rarely go outside for more than a half an hour. Two summers ago, I had a pair of feral kitties who lived under my shed, and they brought their six-legged friends along. They are gone, and I have not had issues with fleas since.

15. Right now we're trying
food grade diatomaceous earth rather than the chemicals. Flea population decreasing but not quite gone yet.

The problem with all of the remedies is the fleas literally have to walk though them for them to work at all.
