NotLocke McMibster said he has to gather all the candidates together to get off the island. Right? I think what he has to do is kill them all, Jack, Hurley, Sawyer, and both Sun AND Jin (just to be safe). That's why he doesn't worry about Sayid or Sawyer going on recon missions to Hydra Island; that's why he's desperate to get Jin back from Widmore. Widmore doesn't want to kill Jin, but Smokey absolutely needs to.

This is just speculation, of course, but I think he's going to get most of them in the end.

That's not even very speculative at this point in time it is very obvious. He needs to be sure Jacob can't be replaced, but I think there is a candidate who is not on that list and I think he will never kill them all.

I don't think he can directly just kill them, however, or he would have already.

I realize he can't kill them directly. He needs for them to be killed. I suspect there will be some killing of each other .
