I love videogame emulation.
There. I said it. It's not quite as dirty as music piracy, but thievery just the same. And I love it. I grew up poor and never even had an NES. I got around to having a Genesis when I was older but never could afford games.

But now? I have em all. MAME. ZNES. Project64. Satourne. NullDC. All you need is a generic USB gamepad or a tankstick, a computer, and the internet. Ahhhhh.

I'm on World 6 in Super Mario 3 (SNES Super Mario Allstars version). I have my eye on Sonic and Knuckles next.

3. Take note:
My geek habit doesn't pretend to be smarter than other geek habits.

Example: Star Trek nerds vs. Star Wars nerds.

My geek habit doesn't involve pretending it has some relevancy in the real world.

Example: you'll never hear me say, I learned alot about the real world by playing Double Dragon. Or, Super Mario influenced science exploration of mushrooms.

My geek habit actually existed.

Example: Assholes floating around space in pretend space vessels having pretend space drama.

My geek habit is inclusive.

Example: Only Sci-Fi fans like Sci-Fi. Everyone loves Pac-Man.

My geek habit will not get me laid.

Example: Trekkies thinking in the future, if everything goes right, brains will get you laid versus being good looking.

My geek habit is fun.

Example: All Star Trek movies.

My geek habit doesn't require paying attention to detail.

Example: Anyone can play Donkey Kong. Only an asshole knows and wants to know what book Chewbacca dies in.

2. Emulators are awesome.
I have all my old Atari computers and games on my Linux desktop.

Most of them still exist as hardware in boxes in my garage, but it's much easier to open the virtual machines on my desktop.

I was never a fan of the Atari joystick, they were truly awful compared to other game consoles, but there are ways to hook them up if one wants a more authentic experience.

4. The 2600 was somewhat before my time.
I grew up in the 'tween era of the 5200/NES. It doesn't seem that far back in time but when you look at modern games, it might as well be a thousand years ago.

6. Yeah, for us poor kids who grew up without consoles its awesome.
And for anyone who actually did own the games and consoles but they don't work anymore, its also great. I was in the first category though. Unless you count DOSBox. Then I own a whole bunch of games that won't run anymore.

9. Stella, probably.
I've never messed with it but I remember a buddy of mine claiming that every 2600 game could fit onto a 3.5 floppy.

Crazy.

12. Me too. I had an NES and an SNES but my parents got rid of them a long time ago.
My parents were always pretty bad about keeping stuff that I wanted.

They were always really quick to throw out my stuff without regard to its sentimental value.

18. Not to mention the sentimental value that others might feel for it
that could translate into money... seriously, a working NES or SNES could be worth money to the right nostalgic nerd. :)

14. I love it, too
Mainly with the old computer games. I'm playing the Gold Box games on DOSbox and loving them to bits. Sure, they're not quite as graphically sophisticated as my copies of Baldur's Gate and the like, but they're still good. Not to mention that I think those were the last Dragonlance-based computer games ever...

I'm playing the original Castlevania right now, and I'm stuck on the level where you fight Death. I got near his chambers, a map said, but died before I could reach.
