Who out there owns a purebred dog?
If so, I was wondering how you felt to be the owner of a creature without a soul, bred merely for the purposes of showmanship and not for human companionship. As an owner of a mixed bred that I got at a shelter, I have to say I'm disgusted by anyone who owns a purebred dog.

They are both wonderful companions, and neither one of them would be judgmental of you.

3. Scooby Doo. A purebred Great Dane.
Yet another example of how the media loves to propogate the image that the only dogs worth owning are purebred. When was the last time you saw a TV show or movie about a mutt?

Thus, they are not truly a pet in as much as they are merchandising, like a car.

9. We have Bichons, because Mrs. av8rdave is allergic to nearly any other breed or mix
I have never been a little "barking rat" dog fan, but they are actually great dogs. One of ours is from a Bichon rescue program, the other from a breeder. We had another that passed away in '08.

Human companionship is what they're best at. Loyal, affectionate and they want to please.

Guess that's pretty disgusting.

No dander.

Next thing you know, they'll be breeding dogs for their appearance. They you'll have heartless "owners" (what a dominant, abusive term!) "training" these poor creatures into behaviors not intended by nature.

I mean, come on...dogs were meant to crap where they want and pee to mark and communicate. Who are we to interfere with the natural order of things and impose cruel restrictions on these poor creatures?

12. I do. I think.
He's a collie. He was a year-old stray we got at the shelter. We're pretty sure he came from a puppy mill and was either dumped or escaped because he's not perfect.

We've gotten all of our dogs from the shelter. Two were mutts; this one's all collie. While I agree that dogs don't have souls, I'm happy that this collie came into my life.

I don't currently "own" a purebred dog but I volunteer with a Retriever rescue group. While I'm glad you found your dog at a shelter, others can come to us for "purebred" dogs who are also in need of rescue.

Perhaps you could save your disgust until you understand the circumstances by which the person came to "own" the dog?

So I'm not sure why you think all purebred dogs were bred for show. The vast majority were bred for work.

Unless the dog is bred naturally without regard to breed, it is incapable of loving its owner and only looks to the owner as a source of food and shelter, nothing more and nothing less.

66. Actually, our Cairn Terrier
is a purebred AND a rescue dog. He was bred to be a show dog, but because of medical problems, never went into the show ring and could not breed. Had it not been for the work of Cairn and West Highland Terrier Rescue of Illinois, he would have been put down at about 3 months old. It rescued him and raised money for the surgeries he needed. Sam is now 7 years old, and every bit the delightful, slightly stubborn spark plug that most small terriers are.

BTW: the rescue group that saved his life is run by a woman who breeds and shows both breeds. For her, helping these dogs and finding them homes is her way of repaying the joy and yes, profit, these breeds have given her over the years.

Don't judge dogs or people by their bloodlines. You have no idea of the journeys that either may have taken to get to where they are now.
