Austinites, I'm trying to remember this place |
|
It was an indoor venue that played reggae and rock acts
It wasn't on 6th Street
It wasn't Austin City Limits
It was where I shook Sugar Minott's hand.
Anyone?

1. the Armadillo World Headquarters? |
|
They closed about 1980.Everybody played there. I saw Taj Mahal there, also John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers.
They put up a bank building there. It was near S Congress and the cafeteria whose name I can't remember.
It was a huge Buick factory or something.
In the 90s I went to the Austin Music Hall. On 3rd st, on a corner where downtown just stopped.

It wasn't too fancy a place.
The stage was right next to the dance floor, it had a bunch of stands in the back. No tables, if I remember correctly and huge speakers on each side of the stage.
I remember that General Public had the volume turned up waaaay too much.
One of the best shows I saw there was Steel Pulse.
Edit: Old Antone's on Guadalupe!
That was it!

10. Is it still there? Memories of Austin are among my favorites. |
|
I lived there in the late 80's. I remember waking up one April 1st and turning on the radio only to find out there was a HUGE concert beginning at a park downtown. They were talking about 5 stages, and EVERYONE was playing. It was FREE! We jumped in the shower, filled up a cooler, rounded up all the picnic chairs, called all our friends, and were backing out of the driveway when the DJ announced that Elvis was about to play on Stage 1, and later, the Beatles would be reuniting as the headline band late in the evening. Talk about being fooled!
