but certainly it's ludicrous to dismiss his and Engels' contributions to it. To dismiss Marx entirely is to reject a complete understanding of sociology.
On edit: For the record, I'd call Auguste Comte the father of sociology. He did coin the term, after all, and the Big Three of the science -- Durkheim, Marx and Weber -- all created their theories as a response to Comte.

as of the 70s, he was considered the father of modern sociology.
William James was our first social psychologist.
Sociologists, for the most part, are observers/recorders and not participants.
