1. The Godfather is way better IMO
I watched about 10 episodes of the Sopranos and was bored to death. Nothing happened.

2. The Godfather
Is a fine work of art as far as films go. the Sopranos were a television, series its impossible to compare the two. Both were very entertaining and tops in their respective fields when they were made.

5. Exactlly. I'm a huge fan of both, and you cannot compare the two.
Apples and oranges.

30. I was simply not entertained by the Sopranos.
Some people tell me I was watching the wrong episodes, but I must've watched about 10 in a row where nothing happened at all. Wrong episodes? Maybe they shouldn't have been made in the first place.

That would be like watching an hour of the Godfather where nothing happens.

Even the series finale was famous for showing...nothing.

32. Opinions are like ...
Art is subject to various opinions. What some people love, others do not. I for one enjoyed the Sopranos. I found it very entertaining and enjoyed the presentation of the story. I doubt you could point to any three episodes, let alone 10, that would agree that nothing happened or that the show was not excellent. Buts thats why its just interpretation of art. I liked it and you did not. I don;t know anyone who thought the finale showed nothing, the cut to black was a very interesting way to conclude the show, but the episode itself was incredible.

3. The Sopranos was an Italian soap opera.
It had its moments but at times few and far between. GI was a work of art.

4. The Sopranos is probably much closer to the truth
and The Godfather is a work of art having very little to do with the way things really are. Mario Puzo idealized the Mafia while The Sopranos plays it as base thuggery.

Both are entertaining.

12. I don't know about that because my husband loves Paulie Walnuts
and I HATE him. I didn't hate Richie Aprille too much, and my husband did. Of course I think everyone loved Bobby, Silvio, and Big P. Uncle Junior was iffy. I liked him and hated him.

15. Richie Aprile Was Contemptible.
He was gratuitously violent as is Paulie; especially after he killed the waiter for questioning why he stiffed him.

Tony's violence usually was not an end in itself.

16. He was rough, but I understood why he felt
"left" out. His brother was boss. He felt like he didn't get the respect he deserved. He certainly was not my favorite character, far from it, but in the mobster world, he didn't get the respect he deserved after getting out of prison.

Edited on Thu Apr-08-10 04:00 PM by DemocratSinceBirth
He hit Janice for saying it's ok if his son was gay not that she's a sympathetic character.

The guy who beat up the lawn mower guy wasn't very sympathetic.

Oh, and I hated Tony Blundetto.

24. I hated Janice. Well, I didn't hate her, but I really disliked her most of the time.
I wasn't a Richie fan, and my feelings weren't hurt when he got popped. They all did some pretty nasty things. I hated Raphie the most. I think my favorite characters were Big P and Silvio. I actually met Uncle Junior while I was in NYC. He was eating in the same restaurant in Little Italy that we ate at. This was right after he shot Tony. He was a super nice guy, and I was so suprised at how unsickly he actually looks. He really didn't look anything like Uncle Junior. He wanted to take pictures with us, not the other way around. This was also right after Katrina, and we are from MS, so he was very concerned about that. I still could never like Paulie. He just pissed me off all of the time.

7. Different types of stories, different mediums, both excellently done.
That being said, I think I enjoyed The Sopranos better, while I think objectively The Godfather series might have been slightly better done. Both are top-notch efforts, though.

I'd prefer either of them to Goodfellas though. While I don't think Goodfellas was poorly done, I just had a problem with a movie where absolutely none of the characters were in the least bit likable or sympathetic (mafia or non-mafia). Even for brutal mafia thugs, you want to have some sort of twisted admiration for a character (i.e. Tony Soprano, Michael Corleone, etc.). Maybe because Goodfellas was based on a true story....

9. You Can Make The Case Tony Soprano And Michael Corleone Were Legitimate Anti-Heroes
There was nothing redeeming about any character in Goodfellas.

11. I find the character Henry Hill
much more likable than Tony Soprano. TS was a major dick plus Hill didn't kill anyone in the movie. I like both the show and the series better than Goodfellas as well.

13. I loved them both equally but differently
(minus Godfather III, hated it).

I am a mafia movie fan. Don't know why but they just fascinate me. Donnie Brasco is a fave of mine too. I like the movie A Bronx Tale, which I don't think was a big deal of a movie, but it was good. I am probably the only person on the planet who didn't really care for Goodfellas. It had some good moments. I do love Joe Pesci, but it didn't pull me in.

17. I'm working my way through The Sopranos again at the moment
Started Season Three last night. The episode with Tony's mother's funeral has some truly great moments.

But of course the Godfather is great as well. I'm not sure I could pick between the two.

23. I'm Italian, I was born in Massachusetts, and...
...I grew up around "mob types."

In terms of "work of art," Godfather may have an edge.

In terms of what it's like to be in the center of East Coast mob guys and their family members, The Sopranos kicks Coppola right in the glutes.

28. My Favorite Line About Junior
is when Tony finds out he had a developmentally challenged uncle and he said to Unclke Junior when his parents were talking about him he always thought they were talking about you.

The face Uncle Junior makes is priceless.

31. Impossible to choose.
I do wish the Sopranos had wrapped up about a season and a half sooner than it did and that Nancy Marchand hadn't died. Can you imagine the series if she'd been in it all the way through?
