Emma the Dog is farty...
The new-to-us but 7 yr. old yellow lab we just adopted last night is extremely gassy. She's overweight and eats the nasty Kibble-N-Bits. She is still a little stressed but after several doses of Rescue Remedy she's calmed down a bit. How can we change over her food to the high-protein Blue Buffalo our doxies eat w/out making the gassy situation even worse? Her stools are soft but do look 'normal', not overly soft.

1. start mixing a little in - take a week to ten days to transition
mix a little more each day until it's all the stuff you want her to eat - she may still be a gassy, some dogs just are, but check with the vet just in case if it is really bad after the switch.

2. Thanks
We started mixing it in yesterday, she definitely has diarrhea today. She's not eating as much either so I think that a large part of it could be nerves from the new surroundings, too.

6. Stress
will cause diarrhea. I work for a dog trainer and it is not uncommon for the dogs to get loose stools the first few days there.

Yogurt works well for gas.

3. My dog used to have pretty bad farts
the vet told me to take him off Nutro so I went to Blue Buffalo. http://www.bluebuff.com/index.shtml That helped a lot. It also helps to give them a little plain yogurt from time to time.

Congratulations on your new baby! Pictures are required!

11. She's beautiful!
You are so lucky to have you -- and you are lucky to have her!

As for the Blue Buffalo - my dogs just like to eat. Period. But they do like the BB!

4. Plain yogurt or canned pumpkin
I had a greyhound and would put a spoonful of plain fat free yogurt or pumpkin in with his dry food. He loved it and got rid of the gas right away. I can't remember where I learned this trick but I can't think of any reason this would hurt any dog.

7. Second vote for the Pumpkin - cures dog farts and the 'runs'.
A tablespoonful a day, works wonders (un-sugared of course).

I had the same problem with my Cocker Spaniel when we adopted him 2 years ago - I thought I was gonna die! Pumpkin cleared him right up.

9. Ok, I'll pick some up today.
She's outside w/me in the lanai so she doesn't stink up the house as much. ;)

5. One can LEARN...
.
...to appreciate a good dog fart.
.
.
.
Admittedly, it's an acquired, um... you know... taste.
.
.
.
Be forewarned. If you DO convince your goggie that his/her farts
are golden... well... you KNOW how eager they are to please.

10. When we first got Wheezie
Edited on Sat Apr-10-10 11:40 AM by hobbit709
Donna fed her french fries on a road trip. The whole trip I kept my finger near the down window button-the dead skunks on the highway smelled better. One time I was watching her face and her nose wrinkled up. It's gotta be bad when a dog's nose wrinkles up at the smell. Needless to say, as soon as I saw that the window was going down.
Here's the little culprit.
