Do you think this might start a spat with my neighbor?
Edited on Sun Apr-11-10 04:30 PM by nytemare
I live in the downstairs unit of a condo. I have little storage area outside, sort of a half-shed type thing, which the upstairs neighbor has used to place his trash. Once he left it there for one day, which I can understand. It's raining, he's running late, whatever.

Now, there has been a bag in there for over a week and it is starting to smell. I am not going to take it to the dumpsters for him. He has also placed his recycling bins in the shed. He has a balcony, I have a storage area.

I have placed the trash on the stairs going up to his unit. I was thinking about just leaving a letter in his mailbox, but after he used half the shed between his trash and the bins, I thought it showed a lot of gall.

He is quiet, normally seems to be a pretty nice guy, but this kinda pissed me off.

On edit: I would just go up and speak with him, but he is home different hours than I am.

1. I'd leave a note.
Hi, just wanted to let you know the storage shed is for the ground floor unit only (make sure this is true!) Please put your garbage in the dumpster and remove your recycling bins. Thanks.

Or go the extra mile and dump his trash for him and say "Hi Neighbor, I put the trash in the dumpster for you but the storage shed is for the ground floor unit blah blah..."

5. I ended up begrudgingly taking it to the dumpster.
Gagging the whole way. Must have been shrimp or something. Yuck.

If I see him, I will talk to him. If not, I will leave a note.

4. LOL.
I was thinking about throwing the bag up on his balcony. Stink bomb sounds good, though.

:P

3. Try to speak to him in person when you can.
Too many misunderstandings and mis-communications go along with written communications in situations like this.

:hi:

6. So, I shouldn't have just left the bag on his steps?
J/K. I took it to the dumpster as I was sick of smelling it. I will try to talk to him, if I don't see him, I will then leave a note.

Sometimes that "two wrongs don't make a right" mantra is a pain in the butt.

7. I would say you handled it very well
I once had an upstairs neighbor, who called security on me for excessive noise(I was vacuuming)
I stormed upstairs to confront him and he called me the devil in a creepy voice through the door.
I went back downstairs and came to the conclusion going up there was a big mistake.

Years later when I moved out I found out he had called security like 500 times on me.
499 times the guard has walked by my door and decided the noise was not excessive and didn't knock.

8. There are some strange people in the world.
This sort of surprised me from my upstairs neighbor. He is pretty friendly, and he doesn't make a lot of noise up there as my previous neighbor did. I was sort of taken aback by this stuff.

I feel bad for your old security guard, that neighbor must have driven him nuts.

9. My neighbor turned his half of the storage space
into a smoking room, complete with stereo, game unit & bong. The smoke started coming into my apt. I left him a note saying that if he continued to use it I would contact the management on Monday. (it wasn't so much the pot I minded as tobacco). He was already out on parole so he stopped immediately. Yeah, I love my neighbor:eyes:

12. He he.
My "Id" was really screaming at me to do something like that. Luckily, the Superego won out, although the Id's method would have been entirely more satisfying.

13. Get the condo board on his ass?
They live to enforce this kind of crap, and it has potential to attract insects, rodents, even bears! Oh my!

14. Can you place a lock on the door?
After of course making sure it is for your use only.
It would get the message across.

15. He probably just forgot - out of sight, out of mind
You did the right thing by putting it where it belongs. Just let him know you did, remind him that the storage unit really ought not to be used for the storage, however temporary, of garbage, and wish him a happy spring. If it happens again, stronger measures would then be warranted, but why not first think nice of your neighbor who is usually a "pretty nice guy"?
