Whitney Houston? Pfffft. "Dumb Blonde" Dolly Parton sings it like no other.
(Song #3 is a song titled "Dumb Blonde")

Here she sings the song, "I will always love you" on the Porter Wagoner Show.

"One of the prettiest singingest, song-writing-est little blondes in country music".

The song is written to HIM, and here she sings it ON HIS SHOW.

"I Will Always Love You" (1974)

Little known fact about this brilliant woman:

She offered the song to Colonel Parker for Elvis to sing.
Parker wanted the usual 50% royalties from the song in exchange, not just his cover of the song, ALL royalties!!!

Fuck that, said Dolly Parton.

And she went on to be the successful artist she is today.

Bonus track: "Dumb Blonde" also by Dolly Parton:

"Dumb Blonde" (1967)

Bonus Bonus track: "Jolene":

"Jolene" (1974)

:applause:

2. That she is!
Her life story is remarkable.

I'm not a huge C/W fan, but she's just so very authentic and talented and her music is legendary.

6. She is. :^) I don't listen to a lot of country, and even then I tend more towards bluegrass but
enjoy Dolly very much. Jolene is a favorite of mine.

8. Jolene: Also Based on a True Life Story!!! (I love this woman) Story here:
Edited on Tue Apr-20-10 01:09 PM by NYC_SKP
Well, two different stories, a little girl named Jolene and a woman at the local bank:

...Ms. DOLLY PARTON: One night I was on stage, and there was this beautiful little girl. She was probably eight years old at the time. And she had this beautiful red hair, this beautiful skin, and beautiful green eyes. And she was looking up at me, holding, you know, for an autograph. And I said, well, you're just the prettiest little thing I've ever seen. I said, what is your name? And she said, Jolene. And I said, well, Jolene, Jolene, Jolene. I said, that is pretty, I said, that sounds like a song. I'm going to write a song about that...

snip

VITALE: Parton says she got the story for her song from another redhead in her life at the time, a bank teller who was giving Dolly's new husband a little more interest than he had coming.

Ms. PARTON: She got this terrible crush on my husband. And he just loved going to the bank because she paid him so much attention. It was kind of like a running joke between us when I was saying, hell, you're spending a lot of time at the bank. I don't believe we've got that kind of money. So it's really an innocent song all around, but sounds like a dreadful one....

12. When I was a little girl
my dad listened to a radio show on AFN (Armed Forces Network) here in Germany, called "The 15:05 to Nashville". He loved Patsy Cline, Hank Snow, Hank Williams Sr. and Jim Reeves, and I remember him humming along to Johnny Horton singing "Whispering Pines". And of course, there was always his favorite, the Man in Black.

The memories make me smile, thinking of Dad.

10. Play this version of Jolene. It's a shout out to some folks she saw coming in to the theater.
And I think it's very fun.

She even modified the lyrics in the middle of the song.

7. I think a whole lot of celebrities looked worse in the 80's then when younger or older.
Fashion, hairstyles, and in some cases surgery.

Dolly Parton:
