Question about presentations... help? |
|
I have to do one in class tonight. Do I put my name on the first slide?
The subject of the presentation is of course the main title, but there's this sub-title thing and I'm not sure what to put there. In sales it's easy, you put the company name or the date or whatever. This is for school though, so I'm asking.

I've only done sales stuff though, so... it just seems odd. Never put a name on one of these before.
Thanks. :hi:

Or names, if it is a presentation created by more than one.
If the date is important, put that there, too.

3. Do you have to provide your professor with a printed version? |
|
If so, I'd say put your name on it just so s/he knows you made it. If not, I wouldn't put my name on it just because it seems superfluous. I don't know if there's any hard and fast rule w/r/t identifying yourself on the first slide.
My two cents: Don't put your entire presentation in slide/Power Point form and just read the slides. Put the bare minimum on the slides to illustrate a point/trend and spend your time speaking about the research behind the slide.

But I have a written summary of the material printed out which already has my name on it.
That's what I'll be reading from, the slides are just for show. :)

"My thesis is blah blah blah, but more research in the field is required." That's what they say to each other. It also works when applying for grants and other funding. ;-)
Another answer is, "That's an interesting question, but my research led me (insert your talking points HERE and get back on message)."
It'll be over before you know it, and you'll do better than you expect.

5. That's what I've always done. |

Title on top. Your name underneath. Then another line with your affiliation, if appropriate.

You know, like if you're fornicating with half Mexicans.
I always put my school in if I'm talking at a conference.

21. I am so sorry to hear that, and I'm pretty sure it went better than you think |
|
Public Speaking is a skill, and you'll get better the more you do it (I know that sounds scary).
I used to get so nervous that I couldn't even remember giving my presentation/speech, and then I'd find out later that every other word was a curse. Ack!
Something that worked for me was practicing in front of the mirror over and over again. A great piece of advice I received from a professor is to realize and convince yourself that you are the expert in the room, and you're sharing information. Sure, others might know as much or more than you do about a particular topic, but if you convince yourself that You Are the Expert while you're speaking, it might help you get over the willies.
Sometimes when I'm speaking, I have a minifreakout when I realize that Everyone.Is.Listening.to.Me Yikes!
You might never reach the point when you are totally comfortable, but you'll get better and better.
Hugs, Redqueen! And don't give up!
