DU'ers from Maine...tell me all about your state, because I want to visit there
tell me about places to go, places to eat, what to expect etc....I REALLY want to make a trip up there in the near future, just have to get some funds together to do so.

I would appreciate any feedback from Maine DU'ers or anyone who has vacationed there- thank you!

3. Go during the fall.
Nothing compares to New England during foliage season.

5. I understand the original inhabitants usually left in the summer, to escape
the bird-sized mosquitoes. But it doesn't matter if you're visiting the beaches: the Atlantic is painfully cold at all times of year

8. There is a kind of draw to the cold Atlantic for me...we used to vacation
on Long Beach Island NJ for years and we would only go in the winter when the summer crowds were all gone...I've always wanted to go farther north anyway

6. Go to both the coast and some place inland, preferably in western ME.
Most tourists only go to coastal Maine and there are very beautiful watershed and mountainous areas inland that are gorgeous: the Grafton Notch area, the Bigelow Range, and Baxter State Park for mountains; Moosehead and Rangeley are two inland water areas. For a hills/mountains meet the sea experiences go to Camden/Lincolnville or Acadia National Park (Bar Harbor.)

Other than that, the coast has beautiful spots the whole length of it. I would suggest planning to see bigger coastal communities but stay overnight in quieter ones -- that will give you a better flavor of it. The city of Portland is the exception -- it has lots of history and cultural sites, lots of natural features like the Casco Bay islands, and good restaurants.

9. Not from there but I have spent a good deal of time there.
All the little fingers that stretch down to the coast are really cool. I particularly like the area around Castine.

Acadia National Park is spectacular, though Bar Harbor is a bit touristy.

If you like shopping, Freeport is a great outlet town, with the original LL Bean outlet store.

Find little lobster places on the shore where you can pick out your lobster, watch it cooked and eat it on newspaper. Same for clams.

The water is freezing, but the coast is beautiful. Because of all the fingers, it is hard to drive along the coast.

Fall is beautiful, particularly because most of the tourists have left. The further north you go, the better for avoiding tourists.

I haven't spent much time in the West, but I love the coast.

Have a great trip!

:hi:
