Everyone needs to see the movie "Food Inc."
Just watched it. It's pretty scary. It will definitely change the way you buy food.

1. I buy my meat from the farm at the end
It's not too far from where I live. There's another place closer I go to, as well.

2. You're lucky.
I think they sell some pork at our farmer's market that's hormone free and treated humanely. It sure isn't cheap! I might start buying it there--although we don't eat much meat to begin with.

5. Dr. Fate to the rescue:
http://www.localharvest.org/organic-farms/

Think about making a road trip to a family farm- make a picnic of it- buy in bulk & freeze your bounty!

Do ya know any cool hunters? Game is natural, organic and you dont need a heartless, abusive Right Wing corporation to kill it for you.

4. God Bless you! You are a true patriot.
I can get a decent amount of farm raised meat at local markets- but I like in "librul" SF so I'm lucky.

I'm going over the bridge and picking up some nice grass-fed goat ribs that are available. Cant wait!

To folks who have trouble finding family farms:

http://www.localharvest.org/organic-farms/

"There are almost two million farms in the USA. About 80% of those are small farms, and a large percentage are family owned. More and more of these farmers are now selling their products directly to the public. They do this via CSA programs, Farmers' Markets, Food Coops, u-picks, farm stands, and other direct marketing channels. Would you like to support your local farmer? Use our map to find a small farm near you!

Large scale chemical agriculture is poisoning our soils and our water, and weakening our communities. By buying direct from a family farm you can help put a stop to this unfortunate trend. By buying organic produce from your local farmer, you are working to maintain a healthy environment, a vibrant community, and a strong and sustainable local economy for you and your kids to thrive in."

3. Saw it. Changed my life. To those who have not seen it- I DARE YOU TO WATCH IT!
Edited on Thu Apr-22-10 04:21 PM by Dr Fate
I triple DOG dare you to watch it.

I saw it about 4 months ago.

I realize after seeing this movie that politicians are not going to help us oppose corporations- the only solution is for individuals to start voting with their wallets.

I will not spend ONE PENNY on products with corn additives in them.

I will not spend ONE PENNY on meat from right-wing, corporate concentration camp farms.

I will not spend ONE PENNY on fruit & veggies that are not at least fair trade- preferably from the USA, and even better if it is from my region, state or county. Farmers markets and local, family owned grocers are the key.

GUESS WHAT- local meats & vegetables TASTE BETTER. That's right. it simply TASTES BETTER. If for no other reasons, people should make the switch just so that their food tastes better! Even a RW idiot can relate to that.

I used to be the guy who told macho jokes about how many hot dogs & choclate covered doughnuts I could eat. Har-har, very funny. I never realized how that attitude was NOT part of my true values.

GUESS WHAT? My cholesterol has gone from alarming levels to my doctor giving me a "clean bill of health." My girl friend says that I look like I now looked when I was in my 20's. My skin is clear and no longer pale-ish. Dont just do it for political reasons- do it b/c it's HEALTHY!

Thank you to the folks at Food Inc- God Bless you!

7. A friend gave me the DVD over a month ago and I'm too
scared to watch it at this point. I know I'll have to be ready. I will watch it when I'm able to handle it.

14. There is nothing to fear- except tastey food & good health. Whatcha waiting for?
The worst thaing that will happen is that you be compelled to eat more FRESH, TASTEY local, family farmed veggies, fruits & meats. Nothing to be scared about what-so-ever.

See my post above- nothing but an absolutely positive outcome in my case.

Knowledge is power- and quite tastey!

11. Is it based on Eric Schlosser's book?
Whoops. Nevermind, I mixed it up with Fast Food Nation.

13. Many of the same themes.
For instance, I had no idea that corporate farms largely exists in order to supply the fast food industry.

12. Saw it
Made me sick. Growing up on a dairy farm, we always had our own meat and veggies. We had 100 cows and they were grass fed....not this garbage they feed loaded with hormones, antibiotics and animal by-products. (my father must be rolling over in his grave) To this day I only buy from local farms and farmers markets. Screw the corporations and their greed.

15. Rock on! Guess what- the grass fed beef and milk TASTES BETTER!
Edited on Fri Apr-23-10 02:27 PM by Dr Fate
Even a right-winger can understand that- the local, natural stuff TASTES better.

I've been drinking the orgainic milk from grass fed cows- MAN- what a difference in flavor. This must be what mlik tasted like for my grand-parents. I cant beleive what I have been missing out on.

No-thanks to the right-wing multi-national corporations that have worked to limit our food choices over the years.
