Who gets your vote for Craziest Fan Group?
Edited on Mon Apr-26-10 12:44 PM by BlueIris
For the purposes of this thread, let's leave out sports fans and supporters of certain politicians/political parties. Music groups, t.v. shows, actors, film franchises and non-political public figures are okay, though (ie; Bill Moyers or other media personalities).

My pick--for sheer, demented, wouldn't-want-to-be-around-them-when-they're-talking-about-it Crazy, I'd have to go with the LOtR crowd. Too many bad experiences with the really obsessed ones. Either that or the people who followed (literally) Phish. Grateful Dead, I kind of understand. Phish? Don't get it.

I wonder what it says about me that I'm a member of 3 of the fan bases described here....

2. Star Trek, no contest.
Have you ever been to a convention? Oh man...

FWIW I am assuming that by 'craziest' you mean most devoted to the subject matter. These people actually speak Klingon, make costumes that rival the ones in Hollywood... it's unreal, truly.

3. I don't really have a definition for crazy in this context. Crazy can be defined by each poster.
Edited on Mon Apr-26-10 12:46 PM by BlueIris
Star Trek fans make my #2 spot for Most Crazy. Followed closely by X-Files fans, fans of the television show Mystery Science 3,000 and fans of Harry Potter.

6. Examples: the ones I ran into at the sneak peak of "Fellowship of the Ring" who were wearing
Edited on Mon Apr-26-10 01:50 PM by BlueIris
what I would swear were stolen "Ring Wraith" cloaks from the actual set. Okay, not really, but these were film quality replicas that must have cost $$$ to acquire. To wear to one event.

The ones who (tried to) speak in Elvin outside the same premier.

The one who started crying when he thought I might not drive him to said premier (age 23 at the time.)

The ones who inspired the book "When a Fan Hits the Shit: The Rise and Fall of a Phony Charity," available here at Amazon.com, which includes a couple who wanted to get married at an event party for the premier of "Return of the King" (and did):

Then of course you will run into the crazies.

But methinks the pot is describing the kettle ...

I used to hang out with the Rocky Horror crowd, so... none of this seems all that strange to me. :P

9. Anime fans.
I'm talking the extremely hardcore fans, not the casual ones like me.

Nothing is more disturbing than an overweight balding dude in his late 40s dressed up as Sailor Moon. :scared:

And then there was the Anime fangirl I dated in college who hinted that she wanted to share her collection of Japanese Gay Porn manga when it came time to get intimate...

17. Oh, dude. I once had a "test" I made any potential friend/date take, to make *sure* they weren't
into that brain-warping shit. It involved two questions designed to determine if they had spent too much time playing any RPG, especially Magic: the Gathering or the infamous Shadowrun. One of them was, "What does the term 'black ice' mean to you?" If they answered anything other than "a bad weather condition for driving," I would plan to run away from them. (Thankfully, no one ever answered anything other than "something I wouldn't want to drive in.")

Say one bad thing about any of the games (#8 is a real easy target), and they go nuts.

20. There was someone at gay pridefest last summer wearing a furry tail
I really didn't think much of it, I just thought he was being festive. It wasn't until months later when I found out what it meant that I freaked out.

23. As far as Lord Of The Rings fans.
If you follow the moral meaning of the story, the concepts within the tales, then there are many lessons.

Many people like the stories but do not know why, but they like them for those moral tales.

If they knew why they think some stories are good, and some sad, and think about it, sometimes they can apply those lessons to their lives.

A hobbit hole, and a pipe, sitting on a hill looking over a warm spring day, sounds pretty good.

But the superfreaks I have met within the fandom are ulgy-weird at best, and sociopathic at worst. I avoid them.

26. There are those that like the feeling of the story so much
They internalize at conventions.

I have found it is best to realize what it is saying, and then bring that story into the life around me, instead of becoming part of the story in the book. I try and bring the best of the stories into my life and my choices. I try to learn what I would want to do in a metaphorically similar situation.

Battle of Ever-more is about Lord Of The Rings.
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1hwx8_pageplantthe-battle-of-evermore_music

Queen of Light took her bow
And then she turned to go,
The Prince of Peace embraced the gloom
And walked the night alone.

Oh, dance in the dark of night,
Sing to the morn-ing light.
The dark Lord rides in force tonight
And time will tell us all.

Oh, throw down your plow and hoe,
Rest not to lock your homes.
Side by side we wait the might
Of the darkest of them all.

I hear the horses' thunder
Down in the valley below,
I'm waiting for the angels of Avalon,
Waiting for the eastern glow.

The apples of the valley hold
The seeds of happiness,
The ground is rich from tender care,
Repay, do not forget, no, no.
Oh, dance in the dark of night,
Sing to the morning light.

The apples turn to brown and black,
The tyrant's face is red.

Oh the war is common cry,
Pick up you swords and fly.
The sky is filled with good and bad
That mortals never know.

Oh, well, the night is long
The beads of time pass slow,
Tired eyes on the sunrise,
Waiting for the eastern glow.

The pain of war cannot exceed
The woe of aftermath,
The drums will shake the castle wall,
The ringwraiths ride in black,
Ride on.

Sing as you raise your bow,
Shoot straighter than before.
No comfort has the fire at night
That lights the face so cold.

Oh dance in the dark of night,
Sing to the mornin' light.
The magic runes are writ in gold
To bring the balance back.
Bring it back.

At last the sun is shining,
The clouds of blue roll by,
With flames from the dragon of darkness
The sunlight blinds his eyes.

27. Dave Matthews band fans.
They think his music is the only music made and call themselves "hippies", and most like Phish too. Don't get why people like such crap. Oh Parrotheads too. I'm from Alabama and it is cool that there are some famous Alabamians out there but Jimmy Buffet sucks.
