Do "No Soliciting" signs really work or is it pointless?
We own our home and although there's a sign at the front of the neighborhood, nobody pays any attention. We have two little yappy dogs and a big dog to bark, but the people are already starting to come around begging for everything. I already believe in God and don't need anyone's elses opinion on that too.

If a sign does work, where to put it--above the doorbell or on the door?? We have lots of kids who sell cookies and school stuff, too. We do buy but only from our immediate neighbors and they know they can come and ask.

1. It only works if you tape it to the end of the tire iron you brandish every time you open the door.

13. Depends on what you call a tire iron....
You have polite little tools like this:

Classics like this 41" of bad attitude:

or trick stuff like this beast, more like a portable tire machine:

But, unlike the "nine" the tire iron gives you plausible deniability

15. Trouble is
Idiots are drawn to mayhem! I used to bead up tires like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=97wlDv5M4xQ, but I could'nt keep the neighbor's kids away!
Seriously, it's hard to be nice to your neighbors, while projecting enough menace to keep Witnesses and Mormons at bay. I wish you luck.

4. LOL! But it sounds like a joke...
if we lived in a creepy house it would be perfect, but we're in a standard, cookie-cutter sub-division where nothing looks scary.

Someone once told me that most people just ignore the signs anyway. Wonder if they would if I posted that there was a mentally unstable person on the premises?

10. As an aside. Never EVER tell a Jehova's Witness that you're a devil worshipper.
Many years ago I told a JW doorknocker that I was a devil worshipper to make him go away, and the guy apparently believed me.

He went back and told his JW buddies, and they apparently made it their personal mission to "save" me. Seriously. Every fucking weekend. They would come up, tell me how they learned of my unfortunate "loss of faith in God", and ask whether we could "talk". Some were quite blunt about their desire to bring me back into "Gods love and grace" or somesuch nonsense.

It was annoying as hell. :evilfrown:

14. I told the local JW's that DH is Jewish and I'm an agnostic
The woman standing on my front porch let out a gasp and said (and no, I'm not kidding,) "He's JEWISH?"

"Yeah," I said, "a big one."

They stopped coming around for awhile, but they've recently started again. It looks like I'm going to have to post some kind of sign on the front door stating that police will be called on uninvited visitors.

:eyes:

5. It could depend on local or state law and exact wording
Here's the Pasco County Ordinance, for example: http://search.municode.com/html/10281/level3/PI_C74_AI.html

11. It works in my town because of local ordinances
The sign must list the ordinance number, but as long as it's properly displayed it is illegal for most solicitors to knock on your door. It doesn't stop those who are trying to sell God, but they don't come around that often and I kinda like screwing with them anyway.

The last time a salesman knocked on my door (about a year ago) I told him he was breaking two laws (he wasn't displaying his solicitor's license). I told him I'd make a deal with him. If he left the neighborhood immediately, I wouldn't call the cops. He started going on about his free speech rights and I told him my offer wasn't negotiable and he could argue those points with the cops and the judge. Then I told my daughter to bring me the phone. He immediately got in his car and left the neighborhood. I got a good chuckle out of it.

12. In my experience, many kids don't know what "No Soliciting" means.
They'll still come around, in all innocence, selling their school whatevers. Adults, on the other hand, know what it means, but feel free to ignore the sign. Especially the proselytizers.

16. It's to absolve you from LIABILITY!1
Like "Beware of Dog" signs.

If it happens, you WARNED. Therefore, you TRIED and are ABSOLVED.
