Is there a place where you've always wanted to move to, or still do? |
|
For me, it was Florida for decades. I think it's mainly because when I was a kid (1950's, '60's) when people went on vacation, they went to Florida. I thought of it as a permanent vacation land, which of course it wouldn't be really, if I had lived there and had to work, but somehow my mind never wrapped around that part of the deal. And of course the climate was a draw.
For about the past decade, I've thought if I moved, I'd want to go to where it's colder. Canada, for that and for the health care. Or at least a blue area, Madison, WI, or the Twin Cities.
I doubt if I'll ever move to any of the mentioned places now, though anything is possible. Who knows, someday I may request political asylum in Madison or the Twin Cities.
And now I know that wherever you go, there you are. I figured that out sometime in my 30's. Guess that makes me a late bloomer. :-)

3. Growing up I always wanted to move to Florida because of vacation. So I did. |
|
And I love it, don't regret it one bit, never want to leave. Yes, it's not all vacation, I do have to work, but something about looking out at the landscape and seeing lush, green subtropical vegatation, along with blue skies and puffy Florida clouds relaxes me nonetheless.
I'd still love to move to Northern Florida, as South Florida, while nice, is a little overcrowded. North Florida is beautiful and open.
I'd love to go to Hawaii, but not sure if I'd want to move there, just because of prohibitive travel costs.

17. Nice post, Tommy. I agree. I also don't regret living in Florida. |
|
I was born in Miami and raised in Tampa. Now I'm in small northeast coast beach town.
You are right about the lush vegetation and the puffy clouds. There are many things that set this place apart.
And I agree with you about North Florida too. Open and rural and mellow. It's a whole different look up there. More like the old south.
Plenty of recreation too. Rivers and parks and beaches and forests.
Hurricane season can be a bear sometimes and the crowds do suck mightily in central and south FL.
Not to mention the politics.
I've been all over the US many times. And all over the world too.
Florida will always have such a deep and sacred spot in my heart and in my being.
Cheers.

4. If I ever left the US, my choices would New Zealand or Australia |
|
Low population density. English. High literacy rate.
Canada is too close to the US, and you have to worry about the Quebecois wanting to secede every so often.

I thought I'd live my entire life in eastern PA when I was growing up. My family lived in that area since the mid-1700s!
I somehow find myself in AZ and, despite the horrible politics here, I love the state. I'm staying. I'll do my best to make things better.

There are parts of Nevada and Oregon I'd find tempting, were the opportunity to arise, but this place is my home and it fits me like my own skin.

11. we drove thru northern calif, from shasta to eureka, and then down to SF a month ago |
|
the furthest i had gone was living in carmel. so when we drove i wanted to get up to the northern part of calif. i fell in love. just love it there. i really like oregon too. i think we can settle there on the other side of the mountain. high desert. hubby likes hot and not rain, lol. but that would at least put me close to oregon coast.
i lived in reno a while, liked it there.

by then the light rail will be completed and it will only be a 15 minute train ride between Boulder and Denver. I can still go to the clinic and see my PA. Right now the trip is a half hour bus ride. Not bad, but still a little long of a ride.

16. Florida is a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. I have. |
|
Too many people, too much traffic, too much heat and humidity. I already live between Madison and the Twin Cities.
In a few years when I retire I will get a small travel trailer and become a gypsy, just going wherever I like and seeing the country.

South Florida the people and traffic are absolutely a factor. (Although SoFla has a lot of pluses, too.)
On the other hand, Northern Florida has plenty of open spaces, and it can be stunning, especially this time of year. (The phloxes are in full bloom as we speak).
The trade off, of course, is the politics of North Florida, but there are some pockets that lean left (Gainesville, Tallahassee, St. Augustine proper).
The heat and humidity are of course a factor during summer. But then again, that doesn't really bother me too much.

26. My three favorite regions in the world... |
|
. ...are northern Michigan in the river country, southern Germany in the mountains, and the Sonoran Desert region surrounding Tucson. . I've spent substantial time in all three. . My folks retired to Tucson around 1981 and I visited once or twice a year after that. I knew IMMEDIATELY that this area had joined my list of desired "homes". . Finally moved out here in 1998 and haven't regretted that move for one single moment. .

And I've even been there when it's 120...still nice.
I was planning on spending a week or so out there this summer, see a couple of shows at the Gaslight, eat well, play loud, and basically just hang out in the desert, but that's out for now.

40. I'm living there. Chapel Hill, NC. Love it. Lived for 12 years in |
|
Missouri and Nebraska after we left Santa Monica in 1988 (couldn't stand to live in Southern California any longer and certainly didn't want to raise a family there) and couldn't wait to get out of there.
If somebody died and left me a bazillion dollars I might buy a penthouse apartment in Manhattan (NY for all the Kansas folks who think Manhattan is there) and an island home somewhere in the Caribbean. But, other than that, I'm happy right here.
