Let's just say Marijuana becomes legal
Not just in California, but Nationwide - or at least, the Federal Government drops their laws prohibiting it (or allow everyone to purchase Marijuana tax stamps)

Would this mean that during the drug test phase of a Security Clearance, Marijuana would not be looked for?

4. You mean like how after Prohibition it became okay to drink on the job?

5. Um, who said anything about smoking weed on the job?
Edited on Sat May-01-10 12:39 PM by Chan790
I'm about the most permissive person going in regards to the personal decisions of others (though a ballbreaker of a boss) and I'd fire any employee I had who was getting high at work same as I'd fire anybody who was drunk at work.

That said, my boss cannot tell me what I can do on my free time outside of work (Actually my current employer can, which is why I'm using them for the money to position myself for the career I want, then leaving. I'm a licensed banker.) and continuing to test for marijuana once legalized seems like a undue hedge on personal autonomy and an invasion of privacy.

I don't even smoke (or drink anymore. I quit last month because it ceased to be fun.) but it seems important to me as a civil libertarian; I don't get to choose which civil rights violations I want to allow. It's the same reason I oppose the gun laws here in DC...they're actually every bit as unconstitutional as SCOTUS said they were. Do I want more guns on the streets? Not really, I've never seen any reason anybody in DC needs to own one. Nor a need to get high. But...lack of necessity is not invalidation of rights.

7. You smoke pot on a Saturday, and you could be fired on a Monday for testing dirty
And you never smoked pot at work

16. Right, that was very much my point.
My employer should have no right to test for legal substances I'm partaking of on my free time...which would be none in my case since I stopped doing drugs during college and stopped drinking last month. (Substance abuse runs in my family and I have a personality that makes me tend to overdo such things...in both cases, it ceased being "fun" so I stopped. If I could drink or smoke in moderation, I likely would.)

As a supervisor, I don't need a test to be able to confirm you're high at work...if you smell of pot, your eyes are bloodshot and you're acting stoned...you're going home. I'll send you home with pay and call it a "personal excused early-dismissal" if need-be but I can't have you around clients in an altered state. If you make a habit of it, I'm going to have enough other behavioral fodder to fire you without mentioning that you seem to be habitually stoned at work; it's not a job you can do high or drunk.

6. Apples/oranges. Booze burns out. Pot shows up in tests for weeks past time of high
being fat soluble and all, it can be found in body longer. Several (naive) cops I know say that is way it's illegal - no way to test if it was active in blood at time of a car crash. Funny notion, but not without some merit.

14. My dear Beringia!
You're almost there!

People used to have threads where they would ask for help in getting their count up to a certain number...

You could do that...

Welcome to DU!

:hi:

Edited on Sat May-01-10 08:28 PM by Hawkeye-X
I'd flip burgers for a living if it meant legal weed.

I've droven through two MMJ dispensaries wishing they were not MMJ, but legal weed.

One is less than a mile from my house. *sigh*

18. I'm guessing not -- it would be like alcohol, although as others have pointed out, pot can show up
in your system longer.

Mr. Brickbat works at a job that has zero tolerance for alcohol and random drug testing. It kind of puts a crimp in things sometimes.
