1. Used to, but I no longer allow society to brainwash me into thinking my economic output
or even self-sufficiency has anything whatsoever to do with my being a real man. I know it's not easy ,but I'm assuming this has just happened to you. NEVER forget that you're just as good a man as you were when you had that job. JUST AS FUCKING GOOD.

3. I've lost a job twice in the last 16 years, and while it is a punch in the gut, it is
not like losing your balls. The first time it happened, it caught me by surprise, and I spent five days drunk. The second time was two months after 9/11 (I worked in lower manhattan for a firm seriously affected by that), and after seeing 9/11 first hand, the layoff was not that bad. I was actually expecting the second one, and had something lined up when it happened.

What's your background (pm me if you don't want to answer it here).

5. I've never confused who I am with what I do to make money.
For me those are two separate and distinct things. I am not my job.

6. Nah...
I usually have short term employment anyways so I'm used to it. If it's unexpectedly abrupt it can unsettle the equilibrium though. You get used to it. Just new opportunities!

8. The feeling is much the same as...
a suddenly pending divorce or an unexpected death of a loved one. Difficult not to feel failure on your part when this is seldom the case. We are social animals. Part of one's social network is destroyed with layoff, downsizing, and/or outright termination.

Thanks a LOT, Taverner. It probably won't descend again

In the meantime, what the hell am I supposed to scratch?

10. Hey, I'm sorry man.
It happened to me just once in my life. It sucked. But it all worked out for the best.

That may be hard to believe right now, but this is a great opportunity for you.

15. It's called the Protestant Work Ethic. It's part of the American character.
Yes, to a large extent Americans, particularly American males, derive a lot of their self esteem from their work life. If you're at a party and someone asks you what you do, you'll end up talking about your work rather than your hobbies or your favorite recent vacation. So the loss of a job is gonna predispose you to feelings of unworth and powerlessness.

You should spend more time with friends when you suffer a loss like this. For some people it can be as traumatic as the loss of a loved one--even before you start calculating the stress that comes naturally with an income loss. Stay on your game, remember that a good job hunt in good times should take about 6 months, and most importantly... measure your progress in the number of job leads you acquire and follow through on. You want to spend as much time feeling like a success and if success only means "did I get a job offer?" then you're setting yourself up for emotional failure.

You are your principal asset and you have to protect that. You need positive feedback from positive people like a fish needs algae or like Mr Happy needs a fresh coat of baby oil. So stay social and do all the things you need to do to feel accomplished. That's the best way to land on your feet. Good luck.

16. With no job, I can whack off MORE often.
I don't think it works that way with testicles.
