The Lounge made me a better member of DU

In 2008 I was starting to burn out on political discussion (it wouldn't last) but was so hooked on DU that I came to the Lounge for respite.

In the process, I easily learned the inside jokes, the quirky personalities, many genuinely nice people and learned to really have fun on DU.

And then a funny thing happened: I realized how much I liked many people who were supporting the other candidate in the 2008 primaries. And though I didn't do a perfect job, there were many things I did not say because I thought it would trouble people that I'd gotten to know and learned to respect.

That's what the Lounge taught me in 2008. I still talk to a lot of those people and in fact, though I supported Obama vigorously and proudly in 2008 (and still do most of the time), oftentimes I think I have more in common with the people I disagreed with so strongly than folks who post in GDP and can't find much to criticize him for.

The point is that the Lounge was a big forum with lots of people and for me and I think for others, it served to make friendships and better posters of people who would ordinarily be at each other's throats.

I just want people to know that.

...on a side note, the DU'ers I've met IRL, were those I've met through the Lounge.

10. All of the DU friends I have on FB were all lounge lizards.

Most don't post here anymore, but several friendships were formed here and those friendships continue on. I do believe you are one of those friends!!! :P
