I've seen bits - and I don't think its unsalvageable...

Lets just say we take what's there, remove the audio track completely

Silent film, hasn't been done for years - but it would work here

Do the title cards for some of the dialogue, change the overall tone to a tragedy (the problem is that its a Jerry Lewis movie, before he did "King of Comedy")

Add a sepia tone to the movie, but make the the title cards art deco

-----------

It could work

1. Fascinating. The legend around this film is notorious and well known, and I would
love to see it, including the out-takes.

It sounds like a terrible, awful idea for a film that could either be the most unintentionally hilarious film ever made, or the most mis-understood good film ever made.

Having not seen a frame, I am in no position to judge.

But it is wonderful to see a post on this topic.

2. From what I've seen on YouTube, its played as a comedy

Total slapstick humor until the last scene, where the clown goes into the gas chambers with the kids and dies.

But - as a black and white silent flick (music of course should be scored by someone with an ear for Alban Berg and Stravinsky.

3. You've seen bits? Where?
I saw a behind the scenes film but never any actual movie footage. I'm sure JL will have the footage destroyed when he dies.

4. It's already been remade under the title, "Life Is Beautiful".

5. You've seen some of this movie? I thought it had been hermetically sealed away.
Like the formula for Coca-Cola or something.

The only person I've ever heard of who's seen the whole thing is Harry Shearer, and I can't remember what the context of his viewing was. I seem to recall that it was at Lewis' home, though.
